Abstract: An elastomeric particulate polymer is prepared using ethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of a radical initiator has a small particle size and is readily precipitated from a dispersion. The elastomeric particulate polymer (I) is prepared by: (a) dispersing (A11) 85-100 wt.% ethylenically unsaturated monomers, whose homopolymer is elastomeric and (A12) 0-15 wt.% of a crosslinking monomer in water in the presence of a protective colloid and an emulsifier to form a dispersion having an average particle diameter of 0.08-8 micro m; (b) polymerization of the droplets with a radical polymerization initiator; and optionally (c) graft polymerization of the resulting mixture in the presence of ethylenically unsaturated monomers. Independent claims are included for: (i) a molding composition comprising 0.1-80 wt.% of (A); 20-99.9 wt.% of a polymer matrix (B); 0-50 wt.% of a fibrous or particulate filler (C); and 0-30 wt.% of further additives (D). (ii) fiber, film or molded articles prepared from the molding composition.

Said materials are used for producing massagers and housing thereof.

(d50) of 0.03-1 mu m which is insol. in (A), derived from (b1) 30-80 wt.% of a rubber-elastic polymer core with a Tg of below -10 degrees C and (b2) 20-70 wt.% of a graft shell consisting of a polymer which is fully or partly compatible with (A), and (C) 0.5-30 wt.% of crosslinked copolymer particles (C) with a mean d50 of 0.5-50 mu m which is insol. in (A), derived from (c1) 50-89.95 wt.% styrene and/or AMS, (c2) 10-50 wt.% acrylonitrile, (c3) 0.05-5 wt.% polyfunctional crosslinking monomer, (c4) 0-10 wt.% of a monomer with acid or basic gps. and (c5) 0-20 wt.% other comonomers. Also claimed are: (i) crosslinked copolymer particles (C) as above; (ii) a process for the prodn. of (C), comprising (a) prepn. of a fine aq. dispersion in which the monomer droplets have a mean d50 of 0.5-50 mu m by subjecting a mixt. contg. monomers (c1)-(c5) to intensive shear by means of stirrer blades with a circumferential speed of 10-25 m/sec. and (b) polymerising the mixt. with a radical initiator at a moderate stirrer speed of less than 3 m/sec.; (iii) particulate copolymers (C) obtd. by this process; (iv) moulded prods. made from (I).

Abstract: In a process for producing modified rubber moulding masses, a first mixture (A) that contains at least one alkyl acrylate or methacrylate (a) having the general formula (I), in which R stands for a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and R stands for an alkyl group with 1 to 32 carbon atoms, at least one first monomer (b) that forms radicals by thermal decomposition, and optionally a second or several other monomers (c), is in a first step polymerised into a rubber (B), preferably together with free radicals. In a second step, the thus obtained rubber (B) is mixed with a third or several other monomers (d), preferably dissolved or dipped therein, to form a second mixture (C), and in a third step the second mixture (C) is polymerised with free radicals into the modified rubber moulding mass (D).

Abstract: Expandable styrene polymers (I) for elastic polystyrene (PS) foam contain: (a) 75-99 wt.% PS and/or styrene copolymer contg. at least 50 wt.% styrene; (b) 0-24 wt.% styrene-soluble elastomer(s); (c) 1-25 wt.% core-shell type graft copolymer(s); (d) 1-15 wt.% (w.r.t. a+b+c) low-boiling blowing agent(s), and opt. (e) conventional additives. Also claimed are processes for the prodn. of (I) (see below). Also claimed is elastic PS foam contg. (a), (b), (c) and (e) in amts. as above. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of PS foam by heating (I) at a temp. above the softening pt. so as to expand the particles and weld them together in a non-gastight mould. Pref. component (b) is polybutadiene, polyisobutylene or ethylene-propylene rubber, pref. polybutadiene. (c) is a core-shell graft copolymer, pref. with a core of a polymer with a Tg of 20 to -60 degrees C and a shell of harder material, in amts. of 40-80 wt.% and 20-60 wt.% respectively. Pref., the core consists of a copolymer of 40-90 wt.% alkyl (meth)acrylate and 10-60 wt.% styrene, and the shell of a copolymer of 80-99 wt.% styrene and 1-20 wt.% alkyl (meth)acrylate.
