    Abstract: The invention concerns thermoplastic shaping compounds comprising a mixture of anionically polymerized general purpose polystyrene and high-impact polystyrene which is low in monomers, preferably with a weight/mixture ratio of 10: 1 to 1: 10. Each component of the mixture contains fewer than 100 ppm of monomer styrene and, for example, the anionically polymerized general purpose polystyrene has a degree of molecular heterogeneity Mw/Mn of more than 1.5. High-impact polystyrene with an average particle diameter of more than 0.3 mu m is used. The invention further concerns thermoformed packaging for foodstuffs, said packaging being produced using this thermoplastic shaping compound.

    Abstract: In a process for producing modified rubber moulding masses, a first mixture (A) that contains at least one alkyl acrylate or methacrylate (a) having the general formula (I), in which R stands for a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and R stands for an alkyl group with 1 to 32 carbon atoms, optionally a first monomer (b) with two or more double bonds and optionally a second or several other monomers (c), is in a first step polymerised into a rubber (B), preferably together with free radicals. In a second step, a third or several other monomers (d) are added to the thus obtained rubber (B) to form a second mixture (C). In a third step, the second mixture (C) is polymerised together with free radicals into the modified rubber moulding mass (D). During or after polymerisation, the mixture is reacted at a temperature above 120 DEG C with a compound (e) that contains at least two peroxy groups.

    Abstract: A process for the continuous preparation of high-impact polystyrene-acrylonitrile (ABS) by the free radical-initiated polymerisation of a mixture of from 60 to 90% by weight of at least one vinyl aromatic monomer and from 10 to 40% by weight of at least one further ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of from 5 to 30% by weight, based on the sum of the monomers, of polybutadiene having a solution viscosity (5% strength by weight in styrene at 25 DEG C) of from 25 to 95 mPa.s and optionally in a solvent, in at least three series-connected reactors operating essentially with no back-mixing, at reaction temperatures of from 50 to 170 DEG C, phase inversion occurring in one of the reactors, the polymerisation being carried out as far as phase inversion at a temperature of 90 DEG C or below and being initiated by free radicals formed from the decomposition of tert.-butyl peresters whose half life period at 90 DEG C is not more than 20 minutes, the polybutadiene content, based on the total reaction mixture, being at least 10% by weight, and at most 25% of the entire amount of chain-transfer agent (regulator) required being added before phase inversion and the remainder thereafter.
