    Abstract: N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is prepared by preparing a mixture comprising monomethylamine, dimethylamine and trimethylamine and ammonia in a first process step by reacting ammonia with methanol at elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst, separating 10 off the ammonia, reacting the mixture comprising the methylamines with gamma-butyrolactone (gamma-BL), in a molar ratio of monomethylamine to gamma-BL of at least 1 in a second process step at elevated temperature and superatmospheric pressure, separating NMP and unreacted methylamines from the reaction product and returning unreacted methylamines to the first process step for reaction with methanol and ammonia.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for removing, by distillation, 6-aminocapronitrile from mixtures that contain 6-aminocapronitrile, adipodinitrile and hexamethylenediamine, by a) removing the hexamethylenediamine from the mixture while obtaining a mixture (I) that has a hexamethylenediamine content of less than 1 wt. -%, b) removing completely or partially the 6-aminocapronitrile from mixture (I) while obtaining a mixture (II) whose content in substances that have a higher boiling point as 6-aminocapronitrile under distillation conditions and that cannot be formed by dimerization reactions when 6-aminocapronitrile is thermally treated is less than 1 wt. -%, and c) completely or partially removing from mixture (II) the hexamethylenediamine that might be present while obtaining a mixture (IV) whose hexamethylenediamine content is higher than that of mixture (II), and a mixture (V) whose hexamethylenediamine content is lower than that of mixture (II).

    Abstract: Nitrite is hydrogenated to primary amine using an activated macroporous Raney catalyst comprising alpha -alumina and transition metal(s), obtained by (i) shaping kneadable composition comprising an alloy, a shaping aid, water and a pore former, (ii) calcining and activating by treating with aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution and (iii) rinsing with aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution and water. Hydrogenating nitrite to primary amine involves using activated macroporous Raney catalyst comprising alpha -alumina and transition metal(s), such as iron, cobalt, nickel, titanium, zirconium, chromium and manganese. The Raney catalyst is obtained by preparing a kneadable composition comprising an alloy, a shaping aid, water and a pore former, which is then shaped to form a component. The shaped component is calcined and activated by treating with aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution. The catalyst obtained is rinsed with aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution and water. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a macroporous Raney catalyst; and (2) the production of a macroporous Raney catalyst.
