Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily obtain a highly concentrated aqueous solution of a low- molecular-weight homopolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone by polymerizing N- vinylpyrrolidone in the presence of a polymerization modifier being a specified water-soluble compound and a H2 O2 initiator in an aqueous solution. SOLUTION: N-vinylpyrrolidone is polymerized in the presence of 0.1-30 wt.%, based on the N-vinylpyrrolidone, polymerization modifier selected from among 1-6C alkanols, hydroxylamine salts and water-soluble compounds containing sulfur in a combined form. The initiator H2 O2 is used in an amount of about 0.1-10 wt.% based on the amount of the N-vinylpyrrolidone. The polymerization modifier containing sulfur in a combined form is advantageously a mercapto compound, a dialkyl sulfide, a dialkyl disulfide and/or a dialkyl sulfide. The hydroxylamine salt used as the polymerization modifier is exemplified by hydroxylammonium sulfate. The polymerization modifier which can be particularly advantageously used is a 1-6C alkanol, especially ethanol, n- or iso- propanol.
