    Abstract: Organosilicon binders are prepared by mixing organosilanols or condensation products or reaction products thereof containing either hydroxyl or alkoxy groups with either an organometallic silanolate or organometallic siloxanate containing Ca, Al, Fe or Mg; the examples relate to organometallic compounds of Ca. The binder may also contain a filler. This may react with the system, e.g. cement or may be a passive filler. The latter may, e.g. be metal oxides, glass, asbestos, ceramic materials, cellulosic materials. Other polymers, e.g. condensation polymers: polyesters, polyamides, polycarbonates, phenoplasts or aminoplasts or addition polymers of: olefins, styrene, vinyl chloride, acrylic acids and esters may be used.

[Also in Group V] The screw 3 of a screw extractor or kneading machine for processing thermoplastic synthetic material has a non-threaded end 4 extending from the cylinder 1 into an eccentric cylindrical chamber 2 of larger diameter than the cylinder 1. The material leaving the screw 3 is thus compressed between the end 4 and the wall of the chamber 2 before being discharged through an outlet 6 disposed at a part of the chamber wall close to the end 4. The screw 3 is reciprocated axially whilst it is rotated. A further outlet 8 is connected to a source of suction for the removal from the chamber 2 of volatile constituents of the thermoplastic material.

    Abstract: Cooling of softened thermoplastic material in the manufacture of granules, sheet, mouldings or semi-finished products, is achieved by contact with a mixture of water and hydrophobic silica particles. Water droplets are not left on the plastic as occurs with water cooling and the cooled articles do not stick together. Shorter cooling times are required than for air cooling and it is easier to maintain dimensional tolerances. The transparency is also improved since the fast cooling allows higher amorphous contents to be obtained. Specifically the coolant contains 80-95% water and 20-5% SiO2, and especially 90% water + 10% SiO2. A layer less than 1u thick is retained by the plastic and this permits printing to be done without previous oxidation of the surface. Optionally a dyestuff may be included in the coolant.
