Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain, by an economically feasible method, a phosphabenzen compound useful as a ligand in a transition metal complex used in olefin hydroformyation, by reacting the corresponding pyrylium salt with PH3 in the presence (absence) of a solvent or the like, under specific conditions. SOLUTION: This compound of formula I or II (R1 to R6 are each H, a group COOM or the like; M is H, an alkali metal or the like; W is a covalent bond, oxo or the like) [e.g. 2,6-bis(2,4-dimethylphenyl)-4-phenylphosphabenzene] is obtained by reacting (A) the corresponding pyrylium salt such as 2,6-bis(2,4- dimethylphenyl))-4-phenylpyrylium tetrafluoroborate, and (B) PH3, in the presence (absence) of a solvent or diluent such as n-butanol, after joining the components A and B together at a temp. of >=0 deg.C, in the temp. range of 0 to 200 deg.C, and about >=1 bar pressure, with neither acid catalyst nor base added.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable hydroformylating a polymer in the state of an aqueous dispersion by using a specific catalyst under specific conditions. SOLUTION: This method for hydroformylating an ethylenic unsaturated polymer comprises reacting (C) carbon monoxide and (D) hydrogen with (B) the aqueous dispersion of a polymer having ethylenic unsaturated double bonds in the presence of (A) a hydroformylation catalyst under a condition that the catalyst is at least partially impregnated into the phase of the polymer or at least into the boundary of the polymer/aqueous phase. The component A is preferably the salt or complex of cobalt, rhodium or ruthenium, especially rhodium. The reaction conditions are preferably selected from a temperature range of 50-150 deg.C and a pressure range of 20-300 bars. The polymer dispersion preferably contains a (co)polymer produced from 10-100wt.% of at least one conjugated diene and 0-90wt.% of at least one monoolefinic unsaturated monomer capable of copolymerizable with the diene.

Abstract: A process for the hydroformylation of polymers containing ethylenic double bonds (I) by reacting (I) with carbon monoxide (CO) in presence of a hydroformylation catalyst, the reaction being carried out in an aqueous dispersion of (I) under conditions such that the catalyst is at least partly in the polymer phase or at least partly in the polymer/water interface. Also claimed are (i) polymer dispersions obtained by this process and (ii) polymers obtained from these dispersions by removing the aqueous solvent.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing n-butyraldehyde and/or n-butanol, whereby a) 1.3 butadiene or hydrocarbon mixtures containing butadiene are reacted with an alcohol of the formula (I) ROH wherein the radical R is an unsubstituted C2- to C20-alkyl- or alkenyl- or a C2- to C20-alkyl- or alkenyl- substituted with 1 to 2 C1- to C10-alkoxy- or hydroxy groups, a C6- to C10-aryl- or a C7- to C11- arylkyl group or methyl group at a high temperature and under high pressure in the presence of a bronsted acid or in the presence of a complex of an element from group IA, VIIA or VIIIA of the periodic table of elements with ligands containing phosphor or nitrogen to form a mixture of adducts of formulae (II) and (III); b) isomerizing adduct (III) to adduct (II); c) converting adduct (III) into acetal of formula (IV) in the presence of a sufficient quantity of an alcohol ROH I to form acetal (IV) and a homogeneous or heterogeneous transitional metal element catalyst which is different from dicobaltoctacarbonyl or hydridocobalttetracarbonyl in the liquid phase in essentially water-free conditions and d) then reacting this acetal (IV) with hydrogen and water or water in the presence of a homogenous or heterogeneous transitional metal element catalyst which is different from dicobaltoctacarbonyl or hydridocobalttetracarbonyl in liquid phase to produce n-butyraldehyde and/or n-butanol and releasing the alcohol ROH I and returning the released alcohol ROH I to the reaction in accordance with partial reaction a) and/or c).

According to said method, oligomer mixtures derived from cyclopentene of the formula (I) are used as starting material, wherein n represents an integral number between 1 and 15 and R , R , R and R represent, independently of each other, hydrogen or alkyl. The invention further relates to the use of these oligomer mixtures.

Abstract: Process for the preparation of aldehydes by the hydroformylation of olefins having more than 7 carbon atoms, comprising the stage of hydroformylation by means of a rhodium catalyst dissolved in homogeneous reaction medium, the separation of the rhodium catalyst from the material discharged from the hydroformylation reaction and the recycling of the rhodium separated from the material discharged from the hydroformylation to the hydroformylation stage, in which the rhodium catalyst is extracted into the aqueous phase from the material discharged from the hydroformylation by means of an aqueous solution of a nitrogen-containing complexing agent from the group consisting of the optionally substituted pyridines, quinolines, 2,2'-bipyridines, 1,10-phenanthrolines, 2,2'-biquinolines, 2,2',6',2''-terpyridines and porphines which are sulphonated or carry sulphonated substituents, and/or from the group consisting of the carboxylated pyridines, the carboxylated quinolines, the optionally substituted 2,2'-bipyridines, 1,10-phenanthrolines, 2,2'-biquinolines, 2,2',6',2''-terpyridines and porphines which are carboxylated or carry carboxylated substituents, and the aqueous, rhodium-containing extract is recycled to the hydroformylation stage.
