An aqueous, heat and cold stable, non-alcoholic or slightly-alcoholic microemulsion based antimicrobial mouthwash composition with improved antimicrobial efficacy. The composition comprises a unique water-soluble matrix composite, at least one water-immiscible or water- insoluble antimicrobial agent, and optionally, a preservative or preservative system, a weak carboxylic acid, a coloring agent and other additives. Examples of antimicrobial agents include menthol, thymol, eucalyptol and/or methyl salicylate. A process for preparing the oral care composition is also disclosed.

The present invention provides oral care compositions for treating tooth sensitivity. The composition comprises a synergistic mixture containing a copolymer having at least one repeating unit of alkyl vinyl ether functionality and a monomer having at least one repeating unit of ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride functionality present in an amount of about 0.1 to about 50% (w /w) of the total mixture; and a homo polymer having repeating unit of alkyl vinyl ether functionality present in an amount of about 0.1 to about 50% (w / w) of the total mixture. These synergistic mixtures of polymers act as barriers for dentin flow and reduce pain and discomfort caused by tooth sensitivity and exhibits at least 60% average reduction in dentin flow.

Slurry copolymerization of maleic anhydride with (meth)acrylic acid and, optionally, with C1-C4 alkyl vinyl ether in a cosolvent system of cyclohexane and ethyl acetate yields a pumpable slurry, from which uniform, fine, white powders having a predetermined weight average molecular weight of about 10,000 to one million, preferably about 30,000 to 400,000 are obtained. The copolymers are useful in a denture adhesive composition which is a mixed partial salt of the copolymer.

This invention relates to an improved denture adhesive composition having extended holding power accompanied by adhesion building properties during use and having increased gel adhesion, which composition consists essentially of (a) from about 10 to about 35 wt.% lower alkyl vinyl ether-maleic acid copolymer wherein from 0 to about 90 wt.% of the copolymer carboxyl units are converted to a mixture of salts selected from the group of calcium, sodium, strontium, aluminum, zinc, magnesium and potassium; (b) 10-35 wt.% of a crosslinked terpolymer of alkyl vinyl ether, maleic anhydride and a C16-C20 alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, or vinyl ether; crosslinked with a C6-C14 diene, e.g. 9-decadiene, and their salts; (c) 10-35 wt.% of a cohesive agent; in a weight ratio of between about 2:1 and about 1:2 with respect to the copolymer; and (d) from about 30 to about 70 wt.% of an oil base as a carrier.
