Abstract:
What is provided herein is a sunscreen composition consisting essentially of a crosslinked, neutralized terpolymer of maleic anhydride, a C1-C5 alkyl vinyl ether and a C12-C14 alpha-olefin monomer as a thickener; water; an ultraviolet sunscreening agent; and an emulsifier. In the prefered form of the invention, the monomers are present in a molar ratio of about 1:0.90-0.99:0.01-0.10, respectively, and are crosslinked with about 2-8 wt.% of a crosslinking agent based on the total weight of the monomers. Suitably, the crosslinked terpolymer is neutralized to increase water solubility.
Abstract:
A charge imbalanced composition comprising: (a) about 10 to 90 mole % of an amphoteric copolymer having formula (I) where R = alkyl C1-C4, n = 1-6, R1 and R2 are independently alkyl C1-C6, and R3 is H; (b) about 10 to 90 mole % of a polymeric diacid having formula (II) where R is as defined above, and (c) less than about 8 mole % of by-product salts which are the dialkylaminoalkylamine salts of (a) and (b). The composition described above is made by: reacting 1 mole of an anhydride compound having formula (III) where R is as defined above, with less than 1 mole of a compound having formula (IV) where n, R1 and R2 are as defined above, and R3 is H, isolating the product, and hydrolyzing residual anhydride compound in water to the corresponding diacid compound.
Abstract:
What is provided herein is a method for preparing a product which comprises discrete microdroplets of an oil in water stabilized by in situ polymerization of a water-soluble vinyl monomer. The method comprises dispersing the oil in water, optionally with a surfactant, adding the water-soluble vinyl monomer, preferably vinylpyrrolidone, optionally with a comonomer, and polymerizing the monomer or comonomers in situ such that the oil is stabilized in the resulting polymer solution as discrete microdroplets. The product is used in conditioning hair care compositions and hair and skin care compositions, including those containing a water-soluble acryl comonomer.
Abstract:
Slurry copolymerization of maleic anhydride with (meth)acrylic acid and, optionally, with C1-C4 alkyl vinyl ether in a cosolvent system of cyclohexane and ethyl acetate yields a pumpable slurry, from which uniform, fine, white powders having a predetermined weight average molecular weight of about 10,000 to one million, preferably about 30,000 to 400,000 are obtained. The copolymers are useful in a denture adhesive composition which is a mixed partial salt of the copolymer.
Abstract:
A polymerization process is described herein for making crosslinked copolymers of maleic anhydride and an alkyl vinyl ether characterized in that polymerization is carried out in a solvent system which is a mixture of a carboxylic acid ester and a saturated hydrocarbon, preferably, a mixture of ethyl acetate and cyclohexane in the weight ratio of about 35 to 55 % ethyl acetate and 45 to 65 % cyclohexane.
Abstract:
A process for the manufacture of benzene-free maleic anhydride/lower alkyl vinyl ether polymer having a specific viscosity ranging from about 1.0 to about 5.5 by premixing maleic anhydride and the alkyl vinyl ether in a mole ratio of between about 1:1.1 and about 1:2 in a cosolvent mixture of lower alkyl substituted benzene, a C6-8 alkane, a saturated lower alkyl ether with a lower alkyl vinyl ether as cosolvent and reacting the monomeric complexed mixture at elevated temperature and pressure in continuous contact with a peroxide initiator wherein the specific viscosity is controlled by adjusting the amount of lower alkyl vinyl ether in the cosolvent mixture. The polymeric product is recovered from the resulting slurry by vacuum drying.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a hair styling gel containing a neutralized, crosslinked maleic anhydride-C1-C5 alkyl vinyl ether copolymer. The formulation is a clear gel of suitable viscosity and pH which provides effective hair styling at low copolymer levels with no drag on comb-out and a clean feel on the hair after use.
Abstract:
A process for the production of an ethanol solution of an ethyl or butyl alkyl half-ester copolymer of maleic anhydride and an alkyl vinyl ether which comprises: (a) copolymerizing the monomers in acetone as solvent by simultaneously feeding molten maleic anhydride, a molar excess of methyl vinyl ether, and a solution of a free radical initiator in acetone, into a reactor precharged with acetone, at about 68-85 °C, preferably 70-80 °C; (b) esterifying the acetone solution of said copolymer with ethanol or butanol; and (c) solvent exchanging ethanol for acetone by continuously injecting vapors of ethanol at about 85-95°C into said copolymer solution while simultaneously distilling out acetone therefrom at atmospheric pressure.
Abstract:
A pharmaceutical tablet is provided herein having an effective dissolution rate. The tablet contains a pharmaceutically-active ingredient and a substantially linear, i.e. non-crosslinked K-30 to K-120 PVP, preferably above 116, as a binding agent. The PVP used herein preferably is made by a polymerization process in which the vinyl pyrrolidone monomer is polymerized in the presence of an initiator which produces a linear PVP polymerization, and a residual initiator level of less than 500 ppm.
