    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optimal technique for tunneling for transferring a packet from a home agent to a mobile device by arranging an outside agent corresponding to the mobile device at a place common with the mobile device. SOLUTION: Upon acquiring a new outside agent, a mobile device communicates the address of the corresponding outside agent to a home agent. The home agent having the mobile device analyzes a packet received as a packet header destination address, and transfers the packet to the outside agent by using the address of the outside agent instead of the address of the mobile device. The outside agent receives the packet, removes the address of the outside agent, replaces it with the address of the mobile device as the packet header destination address, and transfers the packet to the mobile device.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain a radio access method to a packet base network for realizing local movability in a sub-net with the minimum delay and traffic amounts. SOLUTION: Local movability in a sub-net can be realized by maintaining and updating routing table entry in a domain router and a base station for transferring a packet having the address of a mobile device as a destination address to the destination of the mobile device. The packet can be transmitted to the destination of the mobile device regardless of which base station the mobile device is connected with. When the mobile device is positioned in a domain outside a region, a notice address is assigned to the mobile device, and the tunneling of packet to the destination of the mobile device is operated. It is necessary for the mobile device to have one notice address for each outside domain.

    Abstract: Local mobility within a subnet is supported by classifying wireless base stations, and the routers. used to forward packets to those base stations, within defined domains. Domains are defined to incorporate a subnet having a plurality of base stations. Base stations are used by mobile devices to attach to the wired portion of a packet-based network, such as the Internet, and exchange packets thereover with a correspondent node. Packets sent from the correspondent node to the mobile device have a packet destination address corresponding to the mobile device. The mobile device retains this address for the duration of time it is powered up and attached to the Internet via any base station within a given domain. Host-based routing is utilized to update routing table entries corresponding to the mobile device at routers incorporated within a single domain. The routing table entries are established and updated via path setup schemes to convey packets destined for the mobile device along the proper established path through the domain routers and base stations, regardless of the domain base station through which the mobile device is attached. Path setup schemes utilize power up, refresh, and handoff path setup messages to maintain the proper relationship between router interfaces and packet addresses for routing table entries.

    Abstract: A base station controller (BSC) of a radio or wireless telecommunications network base station includes a director. A BSC includes multiple central processing units (CPUs), with each CPU running a call-processing application for one or more connections. The director is a logical entity that intercepts wireless call-setup signaling and assigns each corresponding connection to a CPU according to a centralized load-balancing algorithm. The centralized load-balancing algorithm distributes connections to less loaded CPUs to i) prevent individual CPUs from overloading, ii) utilize otherwise unused system resources, and iii) increase overall system performance. The director hosts cell components that manage code division multiple access (CDMA) downlink spreading codes for a base station, providing centralized allocation of spreading codes by the base station.

    Abstract: Portable and/or mobile IP hosts desiring to connect to the Internet can dynamically acquire a home address and other configuration information throu gh DHCP when powering up in a foreign network. A two-stage configuration procedure is used. First, the mobile host uses the M-IP protocol to establis h contact with an addressing element, referred to as a bootstrapping agent, that is usually co- located with a M-IP Home Agent, and that allocates a temporary home address for the mobile host. The temporary address is used to create a temporary tunnel. Second, this temporary tunnel is used as the communication vehicle over whi ch standard DHCP transactions take place. The present invention is thus arrange d to use a) M-IP as the signaling mechanism for reaching the home network and dynamically allocating a temporary home address for the mobile host; and b) DHCP to allocate a permanent home address and any other configuration state for t he mobile host.

    Abstract: The number of packet routing addresses utilized within a wired subnet offering wireless services via subnet base stations is reduced by assigning a packet routing address to a wireless device accessing a wired subnet upon power up of the wireless device. A Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server is utilized to assign the packet routing addresses, and supplies addresses either directly or indirectly via a node acting as a DHCP relay for a DHCP server. If the assigned packet routing address is a care-of address for a foreign domain, the address is released upon wireless device power down or upon handoff of the wireless device to a new domain. If the assigned packet routing address is an address for the wireless device within a home domain, the address is released upon wireless device power down.
