Abstract: An apparatus 100 comprises a substrate 102 ; a sensing material 104 for example comprising one or more of a carbon foam, aluminium foam or a graphene foam, located on the substrate; a first pair of contacts 106 coupled to the sensing material and separated by a first distance 108; and a second pair of contacts 110 coupled to the sensing material and separated by a second distance 112, the second distance being greater than the first distance. The apparatus is configured to provide a first electrical property measurement, such as resistance, resistivity, current, current density, or voltage, between the first pair of contacts and to provide a second electrical property measurement between the second pair of contacts. The first and second electrical property measurements are used in determining an ambient temperature and/or a substrate temperature. Also disclosed is a controller for use with such an apparatus. The apparatus may be one or more of a mobile phone, a tablet computer, a laptop, a smart watch, personal digital assistant, or a digital camera, for example.

Abstract: The disclosed device for photodetection comprises a first layer (101) of a semiconducting material, a second layer (102) of a two dimensional material, wherein the first and second layers are configured to form an electrical junction (104), the electrical junction having a potential energy barrier, and a third layer (103) of a material configured to generate one or more excitons (105) upon absorption of incident electromagnetic radiation (106). Charge separation from the one or more excitons (105) generated in the third layer affects the Fermi energy of the second layer (102), leading to a change of the potential energy barrier height of the electrical junction. Such a photodetection device has a high sensitivity to the incident electromagnetic radiation. An array of such devices can be applied as an imaging device.

Abstract: An apparatus comprises a first layer 512 configured to enable a flow of charge carriers from a source electrode 505 to a drain electrode 506 and a second layer 513 configured to generate a voltage in proportional response to an applied physical stimulus. The second layer is positioned such that the generated voltage can affect the conductance of the first layer. A third layer 514 is positioned between the first and second layers to prevent a flow of charge carriers herebetween and comprises a material that forms electric double-layers 516, 517 at the interfaces with the first and second layers in response to the generated voltage. Electric double-layer formation enhances the effect of the generated voltage on the conductance of the first layer such that determination of the conductance of the first layer can be used to allow the magnitude of the physical stimulus to be derived. The first and third layers may be graphene and graphene oxide respectively.

Abstract: An apparatus or method of sensing that comprises a sensing material that is sensitive to a first parameter and a second parameter and where sensitivity to the first parameter changes sensitivity to the second parameter. In one embodiment the first parameter is deformation and the second is concentration of a gaseous analyte, and a second sensor is present that is sensitive to at least one of the first parameter and the second parameter. A second embodiment has a second sensor sensitive to the first and second parameters, the sensitivity of the first and second sensors to the first parameter being different. In a third embodiment the sensitivity of the first sensor to one of the parameters is controlled by maintaining as constant the other of the parameters. Humidity or gas sensing may be achieved with a layered sensing material that may be graphene based, boron nitride or a transition metal dichalogenide, such as molybdenum disulfide.
