Abstract: Apparatus 10 comprises a flexible laminate structure 2 comprising a first layer L1 and second layer L2 and has perforations 4 that extend through the first layer but not through the second layer. The first layer is a functional layer 12 used to enable user input to or output from the apparatus such as a touch screen or display. The holes in the first layer reduce the likelihood of delimitation and allow the effective modulus of the first layer and the location of the neutral axis in the apparatus to be controlled. The apparatus may include a third layer which the perforations may extend through. The holes in the first and third layers may or may not overlap.

Abstract: A flexible multi-layer touch sensitive apparatus has a plurality of distinct sensors (12) configured to sense over an area. One layer has at least one modifier (20) comprising a perimeter, wherein lateral movement (26) of the perimeter of the modifier relative to the plurality of distinct sensors caused by flexing of the apparatus - modifies sensing by the distinct sensors. In one embodiment, flexing brings the sensor and modifier closer together, so that they overlap. Also described are methods for disambiguating between a touch input and flexing of the apparatus, and a method of selectively connecting and disconnecting two conductive portions of an apparatus to provide either a guard electrode or a modifier that modifies sensing by capacitive sensor electrodes.

Abstract: An apparatus comprising a capacitance touch sensor arrangement 20 having a capacitance 22 that varies when a conductive object 2 approaches and at least one variable impedance sensor 30 whose impedance 32 varies with a sensed parameter. Further comprising an output node 50 and at least one switch 40 configured to provide a first configuration 41 that presents an output impedance at the output-node dependent upon the variable capacitance and in a second configuration 42 presents an output impedance at the output-node dependent upon the variable impedance. The variable capacitance may vary when a user finger touches the sensor arrangement. The first configuration may connect a first electrode to the output-node via a low impedance path wherein the second configuration the variable impedance may be connected between a reference node and the output-node. The first configuration may reduce the impedance between a first and second electrode and may also interconnect the first and second electrodes in series via a low impedance current path through the switch as an alternative to a current-path through the variable impedance. A method comprising proximity detection by controlling switching of an apparatus that comprises a capacitive touch sensor and at least one variable impedance sensor.

The central connection pad also removes stress within the components on the island. This connection mechanism allows adjacent component islands to overlap one another.

The curved interconnection removes the stress caused by flexing of the substrate.

Abstract: A template material layer having a periodic profile is formed on a flexible printed circuit board substrate whilst the substrate is maintained in a stress free state. Conformal thin film circuit board layers are subsequently deposited over the template material. The template material may a sacrificial material removable by etching or sublimation to form cavities between the thin film circuit board layers and the flexible substrate. Alternatively the template material may be retained. Electronic devices mounted on the thin film layers are subjected to reduced stress when the flexible circuit is stretched or bent when in use. The flexible printed circuit can be used where repeated stretching or bending is required in, for example, textile and folding display screen applications
