Abstract: A temperature sensor includes a first infrared measuring means, a second infrared measuring means, and a calculating unit. The first infrared measuring means measures infrared rays emitted from an object and outputs a first voltage. The second infrared measuring means measures infrared rays emitted from around the object and outputs a second voltage. The calculating unit calculates the output temperature of the object from the first voltage, calculates the ambient temperature of the object from the second voltage, and corrects the output temperature based on the ambient temperature to calculate the temperature of the object.

Abstract: A sanitary protective cover or sheath for the ear canal probe of a tympanic thermometer. The speculum has a generally tubular body portion and an infrared transparent membrane attached to and sealing the forward end of the body portion. While the tubular body portion is being injection molded of plastic material such a polypropylene or polyethylene, a film of a similar plastic material is mated to the forward end of the membrane and is thus severed from the film and one side thereof thermally bonded to the tubular body portion. At the same time a bonding ring of roughly the same diameter as the forward end of the tubular body portion is injection molded. The ring is thermally bonded to the opposite side of the film in alignment with the forward end of the tubular body portion.

Abstract: A temperature monitoring system includes a linear array of six pyroelectric sensors mounted in a block. A through hole is provided in the block for each sensor. A bore in the block having an axis which intersects the axis of each through hole accommodates a rotary shaft. The shaft is provided with a diametrically extending bore for each through hole. Thus rotation of the shaft alternately exposes each sensor to the shaft itself and to an object in the line of sight of each sensor as defined by its corresponding throughhole. The output signal from each sensor is differentiated and used to provide a temperature measurement. The output signal is corrected for any drift in the temperature of the shaft or block. This is effected by periodically bringing a heated calibration head operating at a known temperature into the line of sight of each sensor.

A retroreflective region (6) is provided on part of the field stop to act as a temperature reference by allowing the detector array to "look at" itself.
