Abstract: Granules of plastics material have grains of an inert mineral such as sand coated thereon to provide a habitat for microorganisms effective in waste water treatment, the granules having a predetermined particle size range, and the grains having a predetermined particle size range and being disposed at a predetermined packing density range on the granules. The particles have an average density of approximately 1.0 g/cc such that a proportion tend to float and a proportion tend to sink in the waste water. The particles arc manufactured by contacting the granules of plastics material with a mixture of grains of the inert mineral and grains of a soluble substance such as salt, at an elevated temperature, to coat the granules with the mixture, and subsequently dissolving the soluble substance grains from the coating to provide the granules coated with the grains of inert mineral in the predetermined packing density range.

Abstract: The retractable conduit of the invention comprises a sheet of memory-set polyester (4) formed as a conduit. To manufac- ture the memory-set strip, the polyester sheet (4) is wound into the desired retracted, e.g. coiled, position, heated and cooled. After this process the sheet of polyester will automatically assume the retracted position. In one embodiment, suitable as a splashblock, the distal end (47) of the polyester sheet (46) is wider than the end (48) attachable to a downspout (49). In another embodiment the polyester sheet (4) is sheathed in an elongated polyethylene tube (2), t o form a retractable hose. in a preferred embodiment, the distal end of the hose is supported on a spool ( 14) which will roll alo ng the ground as the hose is wound and unwound to fur- ther ensure that the hose retracts properly. The tube can also be provided with holes ( l8) to act as a sprinkler if desired.

The upper edge of the shaft of a fixed or rotary top, or of a section of the shaft is in the form of a helix of one convolution joined at the ends by a vertical edge 1. Brackets 3 carry helical louvers 4. The lowest louver may be terminated at any of the brackets, the remainder being depressed and completing the convolution. The top may be completed by a crown piece as shown in Fig. 3, or by a top of the type described in Specification 10,397/10. According to the second part of the invention, Fig. 4, the wall 5 of the top is continued inwards to meet a central core 6 and form a spiral flue 7 with on outlet 8.

Skid.-Track brakes for tram-cars &c. provided with maximum-traction trucks are arranged on each side of the driving-wheels so that the whole weight of the vehicle may be brought on to the rail shoes. An arrangement of mechanically-operated track brakes is shown in the Figure. The brake shoes 5, 19 are disposed at each side of the driving-wheel 2, or the shoe 5 may be placed beyond the pony-wheel 3. The weight of the vehicle acts along the line indicated by 11. The shoe 5, carried by a rod 6, is connected to a lever 8 pivoted at 9 in the line 11. When a pull is applied to the rod 16, the bell-crank lever 13, 14 turns first about the point 12, and the shoe 19 is thrust down through the rod 18. As soon as the shoe 19 contacts with the rail, the lever 13, 14 turns about 17 and the end 12 of the lever 8 is raised, thus depressing the end 7 and applying the shoe 5. One or other of the shoes may be operated electro-magnetically.
