    Abstract: 6879. Skelton, M. W., and Todd, J. March 22. Acetylene lamps ; velocipede lamps.-In a gene. rator for vehicular, street, or domestic lamps, water from the chamber 3 dripping from the nozzle 8 traverses the perforated tubes 6, 11 to the calcium-carbide cartridge 10, which, when the bayonet-joint cap 15 is in position, is pressed by a spring 17 against a rubber ring 4 on the casing 1 to make a tight joint. The tube 6 depends from a resilient spring-pressed plate 5, and carries a pad 7 which, when the plate 5 is raised by the pressure of the gas, closes the nozzle 8 and cuts off the water supply. The carbide is retained in the cartridge by a flexible radially-slotted disk 13, of which the inner edge can move upwards as the carbide expands on saturation. A single cock 20 controls the supply of water to the carbide and of gas to the burner 28, the gas from the generator ascending through a filter 24 and a valve 25 to the space 26. Gas generated in excess of that consumed by the burner traverses a non-return inlet valve 31 to a rubber bag 30, whence it escapes through a non-return outlet valve 33 to the space 26 upon the gas pressure therein falling below the normal. A safety escape device for the gas bag 30 is formed by a collar 38, which slides on the perforated tube 34,

A clevis has limbs which are expendable through co-operating apertures in the article and thence into said body portion. Bulk evaporators.-A salt pan having a number of furnace flues b below it is fitted with chambers f, f connected by pipes h immersed in the brine, the arrangement being such that the whole or part of the flue gases pass upwards to the chamber f, through the pipes h to the chamber f , downwards to the flues, and finally to the chimney. The brine is preheated by passage through pipes d of flat or oval crosssection arranged in the flues b. The pan may be heated by the hot flue gases from pans of ordinary construction, the gases being led from the old pans to the chamber f.

    Abstract: An anti-theft alarm is provided, for an externally powered electrically operated device which has an openable case containing internal components. The alarm comprises: a) a rechargeable battery b) a motion sensor to detect movement of the device, and a tamper switch to determine if the case is about to be opened or has been opened, c) a DC power supply connected to a circuit for recharging the battery, the DC supply being dependent on the external power supply for the device, d) a warning means activated by controller, powered by the battery, the controller being activated by a condition selected from the group consisting of i) no DC power and activation of the motion sensor and ii) activation of the tamper switch e) an arming latch which keeps the warning means activated when either of the conditions in d) is satisfied e) a key switch which is adapted to disarm the alarm when the DC power is off. The alarm is particularly useful for computers which are valuable in themselves or have valuable components.

    Abstract: 27,563. Walker, J., and Todd, J. Dec. 4. Chimney and ventilating-shaft tops.-The top consists of a base 1 with spiral ribs 2 covered by a sleeve - 5 and capped by a finial 9, Fig. 3, or by a modification of the spiral louver top described in Specification No. 5404, A.D. 1896. The sleeve 5 is of the form shown in Fig. 2, and has a chamfered upper edge 7 and abutments 8 for supporting the piece 9 or the lowest of the spiral sections. These sections each form a turn and a third, and have cylindrical bores and extensions 11 which have chamfered upper and lower edges 12, 13, forming a continuous air inlet. The topmost section is a plain conical piece 14 .

Chimney and ventilating-shaft tops.-Helical louvers making one convolution or less are provided, and tops of the type described in Specification 10,397/10 are also provided with cores. Fig. 2 illustrates the first part of the invention. The upper edge of the shaft of a fixed or rotary top, or of a section of the shaft is in the form of a helix of one convolution joined at the ends by a vertical edge 1. Brackets 3 carry helical louvers 4. The lowest louver may be terminated at any of the brackets, the remainder being depressed and completing the convolution. The top may be completed by a crown piece as shown in Fig. 3, or by a top of the type described in Specification 10,397/10. According to the second part of the invention, Fig. 4, the wall 5 of the top is continued inwards to meet a central core 6 and form a spiral flue 7 with on outlet 8.
