Abstract: The invention relates to fine-particled polymer dispersions which contain starch and which are obtained by emulsion copolymerisation with redox initiators of ethylenically unsaturated monomers from the group containing ( a) 45 - 55 wt. % of at least one, optionally substituted, styrene, methacrylic acid methylester, acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile, (b) 15 - 29 wt.- % of at least one acrylic acid-C1-C12-alkyl ester and/or a methacrylic acid-C2 - C12-alkyl ester and, (c) 0 - 10 wt.- % of at least one other ethylenically unsaturated copolymerisable monomer, in an aqueous medium in the presence of (d) 15 - 35 wt. % of a degraded cationised starch, which has a molar mass Mw of between 1000 - 65 000. The total (a) + (b) + (c) + (d) = 100 % and refers to the total content of solid material. The invention also relates to a meth od for producing said type of polymer dispersions by means of emulsion polymerisation of the monomers (a), (b) and (c) in an aqueous medium with redox initiators in the presence of (d) cationic starch and to the use of polymer dispersions containing starch as resizing agents for paper, pulp and cardboard.

Abstract: A paper size which comprises a stable aqueous dispersion of a reactive size, from 5 to 100% by weight, based on the reactive size, of a substantially linear nitrogen-comprising polymer having at least 3 mmol/g of basic nitrogen atoms, and from 1 to 50% by weight of cationic starch having a degree of substitution of at least 0.05 is described. The paper size has a good sizing effect and a stable viscosity.

Abstract: Finely divided, amphoteric, aqueous polymer dispersions which are obtainable by a two-stage polymerization, a prepolymer being prepared in the first polymerization stage from a monomer mixture comprising (a) from 15 to 40% by weight of at least one (meth)acrylate and/or (meth)acrylamide having in each case a free amino group, protonated amino group and/or quaternized amino group, (b) from 40 to 70% by weight of at least one optionally substituted styrene, (c) from 0 to 25% by weight of acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile, (d) from 0.5 to 5% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising acid groups and (e) from 0 to 30% by weight of at least one nonionic, ethylenically unsaturated monomer differing from (b) and (c), the sum of (a)+(b)+(c)+(d)+(e) being 100% by weight, in a solution polymerization in a solvent partly to completely miscible with water, water then being added to the solution/dispersion of the prepolymer and then at least one nonionic, ethylenically unsaturated monomer being subjected to an emulsion polymerization in the aqueous solution of the prepolymer in a second polymerization stage, processes for the preparation of the polymer dispersions by two-stage polymerization and use of the polymer dispersions as sizes for paper, board and cardboard.

The invention also relates to the use of paper products for producing containers for packing liquids, especially drinks, said paper products being respectively obtained by (i) gluing a paper material consisting of an aqueous suspension of cellulose fibres into the mass by means of at least one polymer gluing agent or a polymer gluing agent and an aqueous dispersion of an alkyl ketene dimer or t he mixtures thereof in the presence of a retention agent and optionally a water - soluble aluminium compound and optionally at least one cationic polymer, (ii ) the paper material is drained on the wire of a paper machine, (iii) the pape r product is dried, and (iv) the paper product is laminated on one or both sid es with a plastic or metal film.
