Abstract: The invention relates to a fine-particled, amphoteric, aqueous polymer dispersion, obtained by means of a two-stage polymerisation, whereby, in the first polymerisation stage, a pre-polymer made from a monomer mixture of (a) 15 to 40 wt. % of at least one (meth)acrylate ester and/or (meth)acrylamide with a free, protonated and/or quaternised amino group, (b) 40 to 70 wt. % of at least one optionally substituted styrol, (c) 0 to 25 wt. % acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile, (d) 0.5 to 5 wt. % of at least one ethylenically-unsaturated monomer comprising acid groups and (e) 0 to 30 wt. % of at least one non-ionic ethylenically-unsaturated monomer different from (b) or (c) and the sum of (a) + (b) + (c) + (d) + (e) = 100 wt. % is prepared by solution polymerisation in a solvent which is partly to completely miscible with water, the solution/dispersion of the pre-polymer is then added to water and then subjected to an emulsion polymerisation in a second polymerisation step with at least one non-ionic, ethylenically-unsaturated monomer. The invention further relates to the production of the polymer dispersion by a two-stage polymerisation and use of the polymer dispersion as sizing medium for paper, pulp and cardboard.

Abstract: The invention relates to fine-particled polymer dispersions which contain starch and which are obtained by emulsion copolymerisation with redox initiators of ethylenically unsaturated monomers from the group containing ( a) 45 - 55 wt. % of at least one, optionally substituted, styrene, methacrylic acid methylester, acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile, (b) 15 - 29 wt.- % of at least one acrylic acid-C1-C12-alkyl ester and/or a methacrylic acid-C2 - C12-alkyl ester and, (c) 0 - 10 wt.- % of at least one other ethylenically unsaturated copolymerisable monomer, in an aqueous medium in the presence of (d) 15 - 35 wt. % of a degraded cationised starch, which has a molar mass Mw of between 1000 - 65 000. The total (a) + (b) + (c) + (d) = 100 % and refers to the total content of solid material. The invention also relates to a meth od for producing said type of polymer dispersions by means of emulsion polymerisation of the monomers (a), (b) and (c) in an aqueous medium with redox initiators in the presence of (d) cationic starch and to the use of polymer dispersions containing starch as resizing agents for paper, pulp and cardboard.
