    Abstract: A pre-slit injection site (710) includes a housing (712) with a flow path (728) therethrough. A first end (714) of the housing (712) carries a pre-slit septum (718). A second end (716) of the housing carries a coupling component (736) to adapt the site to standard vials. The coupling component (736), a vial adapter, includes an adapter spike (752) with openings (758) allowing for the drainage of fluid in the vial through the spike (752) and into the injection site (710). The vial adapter (736) is provided with a skirt housing unit (734, 744) which protects the adapter spike (752) in manufacturing and use. The skirt housing unit (734. 744) also provides features to lockingly engage the adapter (700) with injection site (710) to standard vials, despite dimensional variations in vial closures. Another embodiment of the coupling component (814) is a spike (816) having a barb feature (818) capable of insertion into a standard vial or port and resisting disengagement. A blunt cannula (730) is usable with the injection site (710) combined with the coupling components (736, 814).

    Abstract: A protective shield 28 is arranged around a needle 26 in order to shield it so as to prevent hand lesions and to prevent contact contamination of the needle. The protective shield 28 comprises a curved wall 36, which can be placed longitudinally around the pointed end of a tubular needle 26 at an interval therefrom. The curved wall 36 has an open side 38, and a curved arm 42 emerges from the curved wall 36 and over a part of the open side 38. The arm 42 runs largely peripherally around the needle 26, so that the protective shield 28 can be used to fix the needle 26 in its engagement at an injection site of the Y-type.

    Abstract: A cartridge 444, 644, 744 is adapted for mounting upon a receptacle 442, 642 in a parenterial fluid administration set 420 for delivering a drug or other beneficial agent to a patient. The cartridge 444, 644, 744 includes a beneficial agent-containing chamber 606 slidable from a first, pre-use position to a second, post-use position. The cartridge includes a hollow tube 496 in which the chamber 606 is at least partially mounted. At least one cannula 500 is mounted to the hollow tube and extends opposite the chamber. A protective cover or cap 530 maintains a chamber protective position that prevents inadvertent movement of the chamber that would accidentally engage the cartridge chamber with a flow path member, such as the cannula. The cover is removed in order to engage the chamber. After delivery of the agent to the patient, the cartridge is removed from the receptacle 442,642 and the cover 530 is selectively moved to a cannula protective position in which the cover 530 is securely mounted about the second, opposite end of the hollow tube, covering the cannula 500.

The valve includes a disk shaped upper portion covering the opening, a lower portion spaced from the housing and extending downward from the disk shaped portion into a passageway defined by the housing, and an annular skirt to attach the septum to the housing. The connector exhibits satisfactory leak pressure after multiple connections and disconnects to the luer lock fitting and long periods of indwell of the luer tip.

    Abstract: A protective shield for a blood sampling unit that is movably engaged to an adapter having a needle attached. The shield attaches to a tube holder when the needle is covered by the shield. Longitudinal grooves on the adapter guide the shield between a first position, covering the needle, and a second, position, exposing the needle. The shield can be locked in either the first position or the second position. The blood sampling unit is safely disassembled or reassembled when the needle is covered by the shield. In an embodiment of the invention, a tip protector, removably attached to the adapter, extends through the length of the tube holder to prevent needlesticks. The blood sampling unit and the tube holder can be assembled and disassembled when the tip protector is attached to the adapter, covering the needle. The tip protector is removed during a clinical procedure and then replaced after the clinical procedure is finished.
