    Abstract: An improved drug delivery system and method for reconstituting drugs. The system allows the delivery of a medicament from a drug vial (40) directly into an intravenous line to a patient. The system provides a method and apparatus that insures that the drug vial is properly pierced and the vial is locked into an activated position when it is desired to use same. To this end, a vial retaining member (50) for coupling the vial to a cartridge (12) including a cannula (22) is provided. The retaining member includes a cannula centering member (64) extending from an end thereof.

The cannula (34) including an inlet opening (44) and inlet fluid flow path (36) and an outlet opening (54) and outlet fluid flow path (37). The inlet fluid flow path (36) being in fluid communication with the first interior area (56), and the outlet fluid flow path (37) being in fluid communication with the second interior area (58). The second interior area (58) housing the solid beneficial agent (66) and allows fluid that flows through the inlet fluid flow path to pass by at least a portion of the beneficial agent (66).
