Abstract: A solid functional material comprises a functional agent such as a cleaning composition, a sanitizing agent, where a rinse agent, etc. in a solid block format. The solid block is formed by a binding agent that forms the active ingredients into a solid block. The binding agent comprises a phosphonate or amino acetate sequestrant, a carbonate salt and water in an E-Form hydrate. These materials at a specific mole ratio form a novel binding agent that can form functional materials into a solid matrix form.

Abstract: Detergents, especially solid block alkaline detergent compositions, are disclosed comprising a source of alkalinity, and other detergent additives including sequestrants. The detergents of the invention use a mixed condensed phosphate and organic phosphonate sequestrant composition that sucessfully softens service water used in manufacturing aqueous detergents from the composition, but also obtains substantially improved organic soil removal on dishware or flatware. The solid block detergents of the invention comprises large masses of the chemical ingredients having a weight of greater than about 500 grams in a solid block product format that is typically dispensed using a spray on water dispenser that creates an aqueous concentrate that is used in a washing machine.

Abstract: The invention provides a process for preparing a highly alkaline, solid cleaning composition in a batch or continuous mixing system, at or below the melting temperature of the alkaline ingredients, and products produced by the process. Preferably, the ingredients are processed in an extruder, and the mixture is extruded directly into a mold or other packaging system for dispensing the cleaning composition. The consistency of the product ranges from that of a fused block solid to a malleable product. The highly alkaline cleaning compositions are useful for warewashing and cleaning hard surfaces, rinsing, sanitizing, deodorizing, laundry detergents, and the like.

Abstract: A general purpose detersive system and detersive system useful in warewashing and in laundry processes have been developed in which highly active encapsulated halogen sources have been incorporated into cast, solid detersive systems containing oxidizable organics that are highly reactive with the active chlorine sources. Abstract: The invention includes a process for manufacturing an improved solid cast alkaline composition, that includes (a) reacting an alkali metal silicate with an alkali metal hydroxide of the formula MOH, where M is an alkali metal, in an aqueous environment to form a reaction product; and (b) solidifying the reaction product in a mold where the reaction product is formed and solidified at room temperature without the addition of externally supplied heat and the reaction product solidifies without the use of external cooling; and where the relative amount of alkali metal silicate, alkali metal hydroxide and water incorporated into the composition are effective for producing a reaction product having about 20 to 50 parts water per 100 parts of a combination of the alkali metal silicate, the alkali metal hydroxide and water in the cast solid composition and an M2O:SiO2 ratio of about 2.5:1 to 4.0:1 and M is an alkali metal; and where the process does not result in the deactivation of desirable operative cleaning components.
