Abstract: PROCESS FOR THE OXIDATION OF CARBON MONOXIDE AND HYDROCARBONS. Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons contained in exhaust gas of internal combustion engines are oxidized with oxygencontaining gas to carbon dioxide and water. The oxidation is effected at 150-800.degree.C in contact with a carrier-supported catalyst, wherein alumina partially converted to .alpha.-Al2O3 is the carrier and cerium in oxide form is the catalytically active ingredient, the catalytically active ingredient constituting 0.2 to 10 weight % of the carrier being deposited thereon, The oxidation is more particularly carried out in contact with a carrier-supported catalyst being produced by compressing hydrous alumina or unstable anhydrous alumina into shapes; annealing the shapes for 10 - 20 hours at 1000 - 1250.degree.C; impregnating the annealed shapes with an aqueous solution of a cerium salt of a readily decomposable acid; drying the cerium salt so applied to the shapes at 130 - 150.degree.C; decomposing the dry cerium salt by gradually heating the shapes to temperatures within the range 200 and 300.degree.C and 450 and 550.degree.C, respectively; and annealing the resulting shapes containing cerium oxide at 700 - 900.degree.C.

Abstract: A catalyst contg. Fe and Fe/Cu as active constituent, for use in redn. of CO using H2, with formation essentially of a 1-4C hydrocarbon mixt., is prepd. by (i) pptn. of complex salts Mex/fe(CN)6/y, where Me is an ion of Fe and/or Cu; x is 1-4; and y is 1-3; (ii) sepn. and drying of the pptd. salts; (iii) redn. using >=stoichiometric amts. of H2 or a H2/CO mixt. at 200-500 degrees C for 2-20 hrs., according to the principal patent. The addn. concerns prepn. of the catalyst: (a) by thermal decompsn. at 200-500 degrees C of the pptd. and dried salts in absence of H2 or H2/CO; or (b) by mixing the pptd. and dried salts with a support, followed by conversion into tablets or pastilles, or extrusion of the mixt., and then either redn. using H2 or H2/CO, or thermal decompsn. at 200-500 degrees C in absence of H2 or H2/CO mixts. Compared with previous catalysts, this catalyst can be produced in economic conditions, and shows a relatively high selectivity in the reaction of CO with H2, with formation of 1-4C hydrocarbon mixts.

Abstract: Catalyst for reducing carbon monoxide by means of hydrogen so as to obtain a mixture consisting substantially of C1-C4-hydrocarbons. The catalyst is made by precipitating a salt of a hydrocyanic acid of the general formula MeIMeII(CN)x, separating and drying the salt so precipitated and forming it. In the formula, the cationic component Me I stands for at least one of the elements Ce, Cu, Co, Ni, Fe, Mn, Zn, Ag and K or a mixture of these elements, or for Ca or Mg in admixture with (NH)4; the anionic component MeII stands for at least one of the elements Cu, Co, Ni, Fe, Mn, Zn and Ag or a mixture of these elements; and x stands for the sum of the metal valencies; MeI and MeII are not permitted to stand for iron alone, or for a mixture of iron with copper.

Abstract: 1397957 Detergents containing builders HOECHST AG 14 Sept 1972 [24 Sept 1971] 42706/72 Heading C5D [Also in Division C2] Builders for detergent and cleansing agents comprise water-soluble salts of acid carboxylic acid esters prepared by reacting at least trivalent, 6-10C, aliphatic olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids or hydroxy-carboxylic acids with aliphatic alcohols (3-6 OH groups), and in which each hydroxylic group of the alcohol and optionally the hydroxycarboxylic acid is esterified with a carboxylic acid molecule. Citric, aconitic, tricarballylic, dihydroxy-tricarballylic, nitrotriacetic and ethylenediamine-tetracetic acids may be used with glycerol, erythritol, pentaerythritol, mannitol, sorbitol or sugar alcohol (4-6 C) and the salts are of alkali metal or ammonium ion. A proportion of 10-80% by weight of salts may be used and then ion-active and/or non-ionic tensides and further conventional additives may be present. Examples describe the use of builders prepared from glycerol, sorbitol or pentaerythritol with nitric acid used with dodecylbenzene sulphonate, tallow fatty alcohol and hardened tallow soap, and also with additional magnesium silicate, sodium silicate, sodium perborate, sodium sulphate and tylose in detergent wash liquors.

Abstract: The total proportion of Cu, Mn, and Ni aluminates is 10-45 (20-35) wt.%. In the prepn., pure Al2O3 is pressed into pellets, calcined at 1000-1200 degrees C, impregnated with an aq. soln. of salts of decomposable acids and Cu, Ni, and Mn, heated to 300-600 degrees C to decompose the salts, and calcined at 800-1200 degrees C. The compsn. opt. contains 0.5-10 wt.% Ce in the form of an oxide and the wt. ratio Cu:Mn:Ni is 2-4:1-2:0.1-1.0.

Vinyl acetate is prepared by reacting ethylene, acetic acid and molecular oxygen or air in the gas phase at elevated temperature in contact with a catalyst comprising metallic ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium or platinum supported on a carrier and further comprising one or more alkali metal or alkaline earth metal acetates, or alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compounds capable of forming acetates and in which the acetic acid contains up to 20% of formic acid. The formic acid may be present in the acetic acid obtained as a primary product in hydrocarbon oxidation processes or as a byproduct in epoxidation processes using peracetic acid. Additional activating metals such as copper, silver, gold, zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, iron, cobalt, or nickel may be present.
