Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting a favored transmission slot for communicating non-voice data in conjunction with a voice-data communication. The slot, reflecting a favored power level and transmission rate for transmitting the non-voice data on a supplemental channel, is selected based upon the transmission power levels for voice-data transmitted by a base station to a remote station on a fundamental channel. The favored transmission slot is selected without the remote station messaging information to the base station concerning frequency channel or interference information for the supplemental channel.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for congestion control in a wireless communication system. In one embodiment, the status of a congestion bit indicates the type of adjustment, such as increase or decrease, to be performed at an access terminal to determine the next data rate for transmissions on the reverse link. The status of the congestion bit is determined by comparing a congestion parameter to a predetermined threshold (186). One embodiment implements an outerloop threshold having a margin with respect to the desired congestion metric threshold. The outerloopthreshold is adjusted in response to comparing a measured congestion metric to the desired threshold (192, 194, 196). The outerloop threshold adjustment maintains the congestion metric to within a predetermined probability of exceeding the desired threshold.

Abstract: The present invention relates to wireless voice and data communication systems. More particularly, the present invention relates to novel and improved methods and apparatus for transmitting data traffic on a communication channel. One such method comprises the steps of packaging a data payload into a plurality of subpackets; transmitting a first subpacket to a remote station; if the channel conditions are optimal, transmitting a remaining portion of the plurality of subpackets to the remote station; and if the channel conditions are not optimal within a predetermined time duration, then transmitting a remaining portion of the plurality of subpackets during unfavorable channel conditions. The apparatus may comprise means for packaging a data payload into a plurality of subpackets; means for transmitting a plurality of subpackets to a remote station; means for deciding, after the means for transmitting a plurality of subpackets has transmitted a first subpacket, whether: if the channel conditions are optimal, to transmit a remaining portion of the plurality of subpackets to the remote station; and if the channel conditions are not optimal within a predetermined time duration, then to transmit a remaining portion of the plurality of subpackets during unfavorable channel conditions. Abstract: A method for limiting peak transmit power in a CDMA communication system by transmitting a first communication signal having a first high transmit power region, and transmitting a second communication signal having a second high transmit power region. A first and a second communication signal are time offset to prevent the first and second high transmit power regions from occurring simultaneously. Time shifting only a portion of the first and second communication signals is also taught. The first and second communication signals can also include respective first and second low transmit power regions. The time offset can be selected to align one of the first and second high transmit power regions with one of the first and second low transmit power regions. The total transmit power signal can be determined and the time offset can be selected to minimize a peak level of the total transmit power signal. The communication signals are separated into a plurality of portions and portions of the first and second communication signals are time offset to re-order the sequence of transmission of the plurality of portions.

Abstract: A method and corresponding apparatus separately estimates signal amplitude and noise in received signals, particularly symbols encoded using turbo codes. The method and apparatus, however, may be applied to such estimation in power control wireless systems (CDMA systems), other concatenated coding schemes, etc. A method and apparatus initially estimate the signal and noise, separately, in the received signal, such as by using curve fitting techniques. Thereafter, a finer estimate is provided by using the amplitude of received pilot symbols or using an estimate of the noise from the received pilot symbols.

Abstract: The present invention is a novel and improved method and apparatus for reducing peak to average ratio in a system using auxiliary pilot channels as described in the TIA/EIA TR45.5 "cdma2000 ITU-R RTT Candidate Submission" to the ITU for consideration in the third generation wireless communication systems. A first method proposed in the present invention to deal with the above stated problem is to alter the phase of the auxiliary pilot channels to reduce to prevent the auxiliary pilot channels from adding constructively. A second method proposed in the present invention to deal with the above stated problem is to gate out the portion of the auxiliary pilot channels that add constructively. The present invention also proposes a novel demodulator design for receiving signals using the modified auxiliary pilot signals.

In yet another aspect, the first subpacket error rate is adjusted in response to an overall packet error rate (350). Various other aspects are also presented. These aspects have the benefit of responsive margin control when the overall packet error rate is relatively low, resulting in improved data throughput and increased system capacity.
