    Abstract: The compsns. (I) comprise, on wt. (A)-(E), (A) 3-97wt.% resin contg., on wt. (A), (a1) 60-85wt.% at least one 8-9C vinylaromatic monomer and (a2) 40-15wt.% acrylonitrile units; opt. (B) up to 40wt.% elastomer of glass temp. below 0 deg.C as graft copolymer from (a1) and (a2); (C) 97-3wt.% poly(phenylene ether); (D) 0.5-40wt.% at least one P-contg. flame retardant cpd.; and (E) 0.3-95wt.% at least one copolymer comprising terpolymeric main chain with side chains attached through condensn. Wt.-average mol. wt. (by G.P.C.) of main chain of component (E) is 10 power 4 to 10 power 7, and that of side chains is 200-22000. The main chain contains, polymerised, (e1) 60-91wt.% at least one 8-9C vinylaromatic monomer, (e2) 40-9wt.% acrylonitrile, and (e3) 0.3-10wt.% at least one ester of (meth)acrylic acid with an ester-forming alcohol. Each side chain has at least one, opt. unsubstd., poly(phenylene ether) residue (PPE) which links, via the gp.X (residue of an at least bifunctional couplinq agent), the polymer -XPPE of the side gps. to the monomer(s) capable of ether formation (i.e., side chains -XPPE are linked to O atoms directly attached to main chain).

    Abstract: Thermoplastic moulding materials (I) are claimed, contg. mainly (A) 10-70 wt.% modified polyphenylene ether (PPE) and (B) 30-90 wt.% partly-crystalline polypropylene (PP) and/or a partly-crystalline block copolymer contg. at least 50 wt.% (D) 0-20 wt.% thermoplastic polyamide and (E) 0-60 wt.% fibrous or particulate filler and/or additives etc. (I), contg. at least one of (D) or (E), are produced by a continuous process in an extruder, by (i) mixing (A), (B) and (C) in a first zone at 240-350 deg.C for a mean residence time of 0.2-30 mins., (ii) adding (D) and (E) at 250-350 deg.C in at least one further zone of the extruder, and homogenising and extruding the mixt. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful for the prodn. of mouldings, film and fibre (claimed); moulded prods. obtd. from (I) are claimed as such. (I) have a good overall spectrum of mechanical properties and can be moulded with no problems (e.g. mould corrosion or delamination - contrast prior-art PPE/PP blends); the prods. are useful, e.g. in the automobile industry.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a thermoplastic moulding composition containing, as essential component A, the product of the reaction of a1) from 85 to 99.95% by weight, based on A, of a copolymer containing nitrile and phenyl groups, as the base polymer, and a2) from 0.05 to 15% by weight, based on A, of an alpha , beta -unsaturated carbonyl compound, where the reaction of components a1) and a2) is carried out in the melt at a temperature between 170 and 280@C in an extruder, preferably in the absence of initiators, characterised in that the carbonyl compound a2) is the amide of at least one monocarboxylic acid of the formula where R is H or CH3 and R and R are alkyl having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, aryl having 6 to 9 carbon atoms or H. The moulding composition is suitable for the production of laminates with other polymers.
