    Abstract: In a TDD wireless communication system between transmitters and associated receivers, automatic gain control of a receiver is only applied during the corresponding time slot within the TDD signal time frame architecture. Successive received signal strengths are measured and gain levels are stored as estimates for an initial gain level in future time slots of the TDD signa l. Estimating techniques, such as averaging or trending of received signal strength over successive time slots, and averaging or trending of gain level settings, provide improved estimation of future initial gain levels.

    Abstract: A communication signal input (20) provides a voice or data wireless signal (32) for transmission. A detector (14) removes the modulation component from the spread communication signal and provides a voltage to a voltage-to-current converter (16) controlled by a transmit power control (TPC) signal (26). An output current (30) and the output signal (38) are connected to a current mirror (18) that outputs a bias signal (34) to a radio frequency (RF) power amplifier (12). An independent claim is also included for a method of dynamically biasing an RF power amplifier.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for dynamically adjusting the impedance between a transmitter's power amplifier (PA) and antenna to efficiently transfer power from the PA to the antenna. The impedance between the PA and the antenna is adjusted based on power level measurements and/or PA direct current (DC) consumption measurements, depending on whether the PA is a linear PA or a switch-mode PA. In another embodiment, a hybrid PA including a first stage linear PA and a second stage switch-mode PA is implemented in a transmitter. The hybrid PA selectively connects the output of the first stage linear PA to one of the input of the second stage switch-mode PA and the output of the hybrid PA, depending on the output power level of the first stage linear PA, the output power level of the hybrid PA, or a requirement indicated by a transmit power control (TPC) command.
