Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new polysaccharide deriv. which is formed by substituting hydrogen atoms of at least two hydroxyl groups of a polysaccharide with alkyl, alkenylated glyceryl ether, and carboxymethyl groups in a specified ratio and which has thickening and gelling properties suitable for cosmetics, etc. SOLUTION: This deriv. is polysaccharide deriv. or its salt formed by substituting hydrogen atoms of at least two hydroxyl groups of a polysaccharide with 8-40C alkyl, alkenylated gryceryl ether, and carboxymethyl groups, the degree of substitution per monosaccharide unit with the alkyl and alkenylated glyceryl ether groups being 0.01-1.0 and that with carboxymethyl group being 0.01-2.0. Examples of the polysaccharide are cellulose, guar gum, starch, and their derivs., an esp. pref. one being methyl cellulose having a mo.wt. of 400,000-5,000,000. This deriv. is obtd. by reacting a polysaccharide with an alkyl or alkenyl glycidyl ether to make it hydrophobic and carboxymethylating the resulting product with a monohalogenacetic acid. A water soln. of the deriv. is clear, has a high thickening properties at a low concn., has a viscosity stable to temp. change, and is suitable for a thickening agent, gelling agent, or excipient for cosmetics.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply and inexpensively obtain an ether compound available for solvents, cosmetics, cleaning agent compositions, lubricating agents, emulsifiers, etc., in wide range. SOLUTION: (A) A hydroxy compound [e.g. a compound of the formula R -(OA)n -OH (R is a 1-40C alkyl or alkenyl; A is a 2-12C alkylene; (n) is 0-30)] is reacted with (B) a carbonyl compound excluding carbonyl compounds of formula I [R is methyl; R is formula II, CH3 or CH3 CH2 or R and R together form a (substituted)5-7C cycloalkyl] in a hydrogen atmosphere using a catalyst (e.g. Pa-C) having pH1-8 (the pH is of an aqueous solution obtained when 2g catalyst power is dispersed into 30g ion exchange water). N-Butyltetradecyl ether is exemplified as the ether compound.

The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a tetraazaalkane derivative of formula II with one or two acyl compounds of formula III (Y is hydroxyl, etc.), providing an amide compound of formula IV (e.g. 2,14-dimethyl-8- hydroxy-2,6,10,14-tetraazapentadecane) which is an intermediate and further reacting the resultant compound with one or two alkyl halides of formula V.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a phosphoric ester useful for detergents, emulsifying agents, antistatic agents, etc., in high yield by reacting a phosphorus oxyhalide with an organic hydroxy compound in the coexistence of a specific metallic salt and completely trapping hydrogen chloride gas formed as a by-product. CONSTITUTION: This method for producing a phosphoric ester is to react a phosphorus oxyhalide such as phosphorus oxychloride with an organic hydroxy compound such as methyl alcohol in the presence of one or more metallic salts of an acid such as a 1-5C (OH-substituted) organic monocarboxylic acid or boric acid having -5 to +13pKa. Furthermore, the metallic salts of the acid having -5 to +13pKa are preferably used in an amount of 0.8-4mol based on 1mol phosphorus oxyhalide.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a polysaccharide cinnamic acid derivative having ultraviolet ray absorbing action and high safety, and excellent in compatibility with an oil agent for cosmetics. CONSTITUTION:This polysaccharide cinnamic acid derivative is obtained by replacing a part or all of hydroxyl groups in polysacharride molecule with a cinnamic acid ester group of formula I (X is an alkoxy; (a) is 1-3) and a fatty acid ester group of formula II (R is a 5-21C straight-chain or a branched alkyl or alkenyl). The compound is obtained by esterification reaction of the polysaccharide with a cinnamic chloride of formula III and a fatty acid chloride of formula IV. In the derivative, average degree of substitution of the group of formula I per monosaccharide unit in polysaccharide molecule is preferably 0.1-2.9 and average degree of substitution of the group of formula II is preferably 0.1-2.9 and degree of total substitution of both is preferably 0.2-3.0. As the polysaccharide, beta-1,4-glucan, alpha-1,4-glucan, alpha-1,6-glucan or their hydroxyethyl derivatives, hydroxypropyl derivatives or 2,3-dihydroxypropyl derivatives are exemplified.

The compound expressed by formula II has excellent performances as a W/O type emulsifying agent and is capable of manifesting pharmacological actions such as hematopoietic promoting effects, antiinflammatory actions and antitumor activities and further utilizable as an antimicrobial and an antifungal agents, etc.
