Abstract: A method and apparatus for a variable mode multi-media data object storage device. Large digital objects can be quickly downloaded in approximately a minute. The digital objects can be utilized or played back at real-time speeds. Utilization or playback consumes minimal power, allowing the disk to support portable devices operating on battery power. The storage device uses multiple disk rotation speeds to support multiple modes of operation. The storage device operates in at least two modes of disk drive operation, supporting a fast platter rotation speed for writing and a slower platter rotation speed for reading. The multiple rotation speeds operate in conjunction with a head assembly configured with at least one head for reading and multiple heads for writing. When writing, the disk spins at the faster rotation speed. When in utilization or playback mode, the disk spins at the slower, power conserving rotation speed.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for determining when a vehicle (108) has arrived or departed from a planned or an unplanned stop, while minimizing or completely eliminating driver intervention. The apparatus comprises a mobile communication terminal (202) located onboard a vehicle (108) for receiving destination information, generally using wireless means, from a central facility or hub (104). A speedometer (210) also located onboard the vehicle (108) determines the speed of the vehicle and a position sensor (212) onboard the vehicle (108) determines the vehicle position. The vehicle speed and position are provided to a processor (206), also located onboard the vehicle (108), which uses the speed and position information to determine a vehicle arrival or departure from a planned or unplanned stop. The processor (206) generates an indication of the event, either arrival or departure, directly to the central facility (104), to the vehicle operator, or both.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting voice and data in a code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless telecommunications system is described. In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, a base station transmits voice information at a voice transmit power and data at a data transmit power that is equal to a maximum transmit power minus the voice transmit power. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, each base station reports the voice transmit power to a base station controller in 20 ms intervals. The base station controller responds by calculating an available data transmit capacity, and by forwarding data to each base station equal to the available data transmit capacity. Each base station then transmits all voice data at the current voice transmit power, and data at the current data transmission power. If the amount of data received exceeds the capacity provided by the current data transmission power, some data is not transmitted. The base station then notifies the base station controller if data was not transmitted, and the base station controller attempts to retransmit the data at a later time.

Abstract: A system and method for reducing radio frequency interference arising in connection with pulsed transmission over time division multiplexed communication channels. In a first embodiment, a subscriber station is nominally assigned all of the slots of each frame of a first transmit channel. By transmitting RF energy substantially continuously, the subscriber station reduces interference arising from pulsed transmission. In a second embodiment, a subscriber station is nominally assigned one or more slots of each frame of a primary channel for conventional transmission of useful information, and is also instructed to continuously transmit RF energy over an auxiliary channel at times other than during the assigned primary channel slots. In this way, interference generated in the vicinity of the subscriber station is reduced due to the substantially continuous transmission of RF energy by the subscriber station. More than one subscriber station may simultaneously utilize the auxiliary channel during reduced interference mode operation.
