This enhancement is accomplished by providing different shuffling functions in conjunction with the interleavers and deinterleavers used with different transmission channels, which decreases the probability of loss of sequential symbols when transmission channels or antennas become correlated.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for coordinating the time at which a mobile station (5) performs searches for alternative systems to which a hard handoff will occur. In one system which includes the present invention, the mobile station (5) receives a command which instructs the mobile station (5) as to when to tune to alternative frequencies in order to search for indications of the presence of an alternative system. In another system which includes the present invention, predetermined times are defined with respect to a reference point in time that is common to both an origination base station (10) and a mobile station (5). The mobile station (5) tunes to alternative frequencies to perform searches only during these predetermined times. In addition, the mobile station (5) coordinates the transmission of reports which indicate the results of searches for alternative systems such that these reports are only transmitted from the mobile station (5) when the mobile station (5) is tuned to the origination frequency.

    Abstract: A mobile station or receiver adjusts its forward link quality or power level thresholds or measurements with which it compares incoming frames or portions of them to reflect the level it anticipates receiving. For example, the mobile station can recognise that at a given measurement time, two outstanding messages have not been executed by the transmitter, where each message indicates a corresponding increase of 1 dB. As a result, the mobile station can adjust its measurement threshold down by 2 dB to more closely correspond to future power adjustments. If the currently received frame or a portion of it is still below the readjusted threshold, then the mobile station sends out a new message to request a further increase in the forward link channel.

    Abstract: A forward link power control mechanism in a remote station (6) measures reverse link power control bits which are transmitted by one or more base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) on a forward traffic channel (10a). At the remote station (6) the reverse link power control bits from multiple base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) or multiple signal paths are measured, combined, and filtered to yield an improved measurement of the forward link signal quality. The reverse link (12a, 12b) power control bits which are deemed unreliable are omitted from use in the power control loop. The remote station (6) generates a set of forward link power control bits in accordance with the measurements and transmits these bits to all base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) in communication with the remote station (6). Each base station (4a, 4b, 4n) adjusts its gain of the forward traffic channel (10a) in accordance to its measurement of the forward link power control bit. The gains of the forward traffic channels (10a) of the base stations (4a, 4b, 4n) are corrected periodically so that erroneous reception of the forward link power control bits by the base stations do not accumulate.
