    Abstract: 1427389 Maleic anhydride STANDARD OIL CO 18 April 1973 [5 May 1972] 18738/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Maleic anhydride is produced by oxidizing 1,3-butadiene, n-butenes, crotonaldehyde, furan or a mixture thereof with molecular oxygen at 250-600‹ C. using a catalyst comprising antimony, molybdenum, oxygen, vanadium and/or iron and, optionally, tungsten, magnesium, aluminium and/or nickel in the atomic proportions Sb a Mo b V c Fed Z e O x wherein: Z=W, Mg, Al and/or Ni; a=1-9; b=1-10; c, d, e=0-1 but c + d is greater than zero; and x is a number to satisfy valency requirements. The reaction pressure is usually superatmospheric but may be atmospheric or subatmospheric with a contact time of 1 to 50 sees. The feed may contain diluents, e.g. steam, nitrogen and carbon oxides. An air to reactant ratio of 12 to 20=1 may be employed. The examples describe the use of butadiene as feed to give a maleic anhydride product containing some acrylic acid.

    Abstract: Acrylonitrile is prepared by reacting a mixture of propylene, ammonia and oxygen in the vapour phase in the presence of a bismuth, tin or antimony salt of molybdic or phosphomolybdic acid or bismuth phosphotungstate and in the presence of added hydrogen cyanide in amount 0.01-0.2, preferably about 0.1, moles per mole of propylene. Water may be present in the vapour phase reaction medium. Preferably at least part of the hydrogen cyanide separated from the reaction products is recycled. Specification 867,438 is referred to.

    Abstract: Maleic anhydride is produced by the oxidation of 1,3-butadiene, n-butylenes, crotonaldehyde and furan with molecular oxygen in the vapor phase in the presence of catalytic oxides of antimony, molybdenum, at least one element selected from the group consisting of niobium, zirconium, titanium and tantalum and optionally a reducing agent capable of reducing at least part of the molybdenum in the catalyst to a valence state below +6 selected from the group consisting of hydrazine hydrate, molybdenum, tungsten, magnesium, aluminum, and nickel. This catalyst may optionally contain one or more elements selected from the group consisting of Li, Ag, Ce, Cd, Co, As, Si, Zn, Ge, Bi, Ru, Pt, U, Al and Ni. Especially desirable yields of maleic anhydride are obtained from 1,3-butadiene in the presence of a catalyst wherein molybdenum metal is used as a reducing agent.
