Abstract: The present invention relates to an enantioselective cation-exchange material, comprising a chiral selector ( 1 ), composed of a chiral component ( 2 ) and at least one cation-exchange group (X), a spacer ( 3 ) and a carrier ( 4 ). The cation-exchange material is characterized in that the chiral component ( 2 ) has a molecular weight of less than 1,000 and the at least one cation-exchange group (X) is an acid group having a pKa

Abstract: Optionally substituted styrenesulfonate polymers in soluble or crosslinked bead form have 0.001-50% of the sulfonic acid groups neutralized with transition metal cations. Styrenesulfonate polymers in soluble or crosslinked bead form comprise at least 80 wt.% of repeat units of formula (I) in which the counter ions are metal cations or protons, provided that 0.001-50% of the counter ions are transition metal cations: R = H, Me or Et; R = H or Me. An Independent claim is also included for a process for stabilizing polymer beads comprising at least 80 wt.% of repeat units of formula (I), comprising treating a solution or suspension of the polymer in a 1- to 100-fold amount of water with a 0.01-10% solution of an iron, cobalt, copper, nickel or manganese salt providing 0.00001-0.5 equivalent of iron, cobalt, copper, nickel or manganese ions per equivalent of repeat units of formula (I).

Abstract: Process for treating liqs., esp. water, in ion exchangers which for the removal of the hardness-forming ions Ca, Mg, Sr and Ba and all heavy metals are connected in series with a further processing stage of reverse osmosis, whereby a strong acid cation exchanger is used which is converted into the Na form by treatment with acid and then with the effluent water stream from the downstream reverse osmosis process. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process allows hardness forming ions to be removed from the water so that no deposits are formed on the reverse osmosis membrane without the necessity for adding stabilising chemicals to the water, whilst regeneration of the ion exchanger is accomplished without producing an effluent water contg. large amts. of NaCo, which could cause a disposal problem with large scale appts..
