Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process whereby a hydroxyl-contg. polymer, esp. a hydroxyl-terminated polytetrahydrofuran, is produced from the corresponding alkoxy-contg. polymer by the transesterification with an alcohol continuously in a mass of at least 100% of the nominal capacity without being obstructed by the occurrence of air bubbles. SOLUTION: This process continuously produces a hydroxyl-contg. polymer, esp. a hydroxyl-terminated polytetrahydrofuran, from the corresponding acyloxy- contg. polymer by the transesterification with an alcohol in at least one stirring reactor (I, II, III, or IV). Air bubbles occurring in the transesterification are broken by introducing the bubbles in the tangential direction at a suitable velocity into circular cylindrical containers 5, 13, esp. into cyclone separators, and thus formed liq. phase is returned through a pipe 3, 3' to at least one stirring reactor (I, II, III, or IV) in order to be recycled. The recycling is pref. done at stirring reactor cascades, and the subunit of each reactor is or subunits of at least two reactors are each individually connected to the circular cylindrical containers, esp. the cyclone separators.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for removing the sodium once more which derives from a catalyst after transesterification with minimum facilities. SOLUTION: For producing a hydroxyl group-containing polymer, especially a polytetrahydrofuran containing a hydroxyl end group, a corresponding acyloxy group-containing polymer, used as a start material, is transesterified with an alcohol in the presence of a sodium-containing catalyst, and for removing sodium cations, following the transesterification, in a catalytic amount of water, the polytetrahydrofuran solution is directly introduced into at least one ion exchanger and allowed to flow through it.

Abstract: The foam produced during the continuous production of hydroxyl (OH) group terminated polytetrahydrofuran is removed and by transesterification of the corresponding ester group containing polymer. A process for preparing OH group containing polymers, especially for preparing polytetrahydrofuran with terminal OH groups, by transesterification of the corresponding ester group-containing polymers with alcohols. Tranesterification is carried out continuously in at least one stirred reactor (I,II,III,IV), where at least one reactor (I,II,III,IV) being connected via a line (3,3') to a generally cylindrical container (5,13'), with a diameter of about 2-4 times the diameter of the line (3,3'), to take up the foam formed in the stirred reactor(s) (I,II,III,IV) and to pass the foam tangentially into the cylindrical container (5,13) at a speed sufficient to separate the foam into a gaseous phase and a liquid phase. The gas phase is led off via a line (9) and the liquid phase is led off via a line (7,15).

Abstract: A method for removing unreacted isobutene from cationic polymerisation involves heating the reaction product and/or the liquid phase from flash evaporation so that the rate of evaporation is not more than 900 m /h/m liquid surface and then separating the foam into gas and liquid by directing it against a baffle or through a circulating loop. A method for working up a liquid reaction product from the cationic polymerisation of isobutene, mainly comprising polyisobutene (PIB), unreacted isobutene and optionally inert diluent, by taking off a vapor phase containing unreacted isobutene. The method involves (a) heating the reaction product and depressurizing it to give a PIB-containing liquid phase and a vapor phase, and/or (b) heating the reaction product and/or the liquid phase from (a) so that the amount of vapor evaporated per m of liquid surface is not more than 900 m /hour, and/or (c) separating the foam produced by evaporation into gaseous and liquid components by directing it against a baffle or passing it through a circulating loop.
