    Abstract: A process for the preparation of polytetrahydrofuran or polytetrahydrofuran monoesters with C1- to C20-monocarboxylic acids or polytetrahydrofuran monoethers with monohydric C1- to C20-alcohols having a mean molecular weight of from 250 to 15,000 daltons by cationic polymerisation of tetrahydrofuran in the presence of a telogen, characterised in that tetrahydrofuran is polymerised in the presence of water, 1,4-butanediol and/or polytetrahydrofuran having a mean molecular weight of from 200 to 700 daltons and/or in the presence of a C1- to C20-monocarboxylic acid and/or a monohydric C1- to C20-alcohol with the aid of a catalytically effective amount of a bleaching earth catalyst.

Ethers or esters of 4 - hydroxytiglaldehyde (2 - methyl - but - 2 - en - 1 - al - 4 - ol) are prepared by oxidizing an ether or ester of 3 - methylbut - 2 - en - 1 - ol with oxygen or a gas containing oxygen in the presence of a heavy metal/ bromine catalyst in the liquid phase at 20-200‹ C. The catalyst comprises a heavy metal source which may be a salt containing the metal in the cation or anion, a complex salt or an oxide of e.g. V, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co, Sn or Ce, and a bromine source which is bromine or a compound which contains or readily yields bromide, e.g. HBr an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium bromide, bromoform, allyl bromide or benzyl bromide. A solvent may be used. Examples prepare 4- acetoxytiglaldehyde from 3-methyl-1-acetoxybut-2-ene.

    Abstract: Crude water-containing tetrahydrofuran is purified by distillation by a process in which the crude tetrahydrofuran is passed through three distillation columns, water being removed from the bottom of the first column, water-containing tetrahydrofuran being recycled from the top of the second column into the first column, the top product of the third column being recycled to the first column, a distillate being removed at the top of the first column, and pure tetrahydrofuran being distilled off from the bottom product of the second column, in the third column, and the pure tetrahydrofuran being removed from the side take-off of the third column.
