Abstract: Acrolein and acrylic acid are produced from propane and propene by absorption/desorption of propane and propene from a gas mixture followed by oxidation, in which no heterogeneously catalyzed dehydrogenation of propane occurs between the desorption and oxidation stages without addition of oxygen. Acrolein and acrylic acid are produced from propane and propene by: (a) separation of propane and propene from a gas mixture (A) by absorption in an absorption medium; (b) separation of propane and propene from the absorbent to give a mixture (B) containing propane and propene; and (c) using mixture (B) for oxidation to the required product(s). In this process, no catalytic dehydrogenation of propane without the addition of oxygen is carried out between stages (b) and (c).

Abstract: In a coated catalyst having a core and at least one shell surrounding the core, the core is made up of an inert support material, the shell or shells is/are made up of a porous support substance, with the shell being attached physically to the core, and a catalytically active metal selected from the group consisting of the metals of the 10th and 11th groups of the Periodic Table of the Elements is present in finely divided form or a precursor of the catalytically active metal is present in uniformly distributed form in the shell or shells. The coated catalyst of the present invention is suitable for the reduction of unsaturated hydrocarbons. Here, better selectivities than in the case of previously known coated catalysts can be achieved. A process for producing the coated catalyst is also described.

Abstract: A process for the catalytic gas-phase oxidation of propene to acrylic acid, in which the reaction gas starting mixture is oxidized, with a high propene loading, in a first reaction stage, over a first fixed-bed catalyst which is housed in two successive reaction zones A, B, the reaction zone B being kept at a higher temperature than the reaction zone A, and the acrolein-containing product gas mixture of the first reaction stage is then oxidized in a second reaction stage, with a high acrolein loading, over a second fixed-bed catalyst which is housed in two successive reaction zones C, D, the reaction zone D being kept at a higher temperature than the reaction zone C.

Abstract: The invention relates to a shell catalyst with a core and at least one shell surrounding the core, said core being composed of an inert carrier material, and the at least one shell being composed of a porous carrier substance. The shell is physically adhered to the core and the at least one shell contains a catalytically active metal selected from the group of metals of the 10th and 11th group of the periodic table of elements in a finely divided form, or a precursor of the catalytically active metal in a uniformly divided form. The inventive shell catalyst is suitable for reducing unsaturated hydrocarbons a nd allows for better selectivities in comparison with shell catalysts known so far. The invention further relates to a method for producing the inventive shell catalyst.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for carrying out the two-stage catalytic gas phase oxidation of propene to form acrylic acid. The inventive method provides that, in a multitube fixed-bed reactor, the reaction gas starting mixture having a propene load >/= 160 Nl propene / l.h is firstly conducted over a fixed-bed catalyst feed material (1), which is located in two successive temperature zones A, B, and afterwards, is conducted over a fixed-bed catalyst feed material (2), which is accommodated either in another temperature zone C or in two additional temperature zones D, E. The temperature of zone A is maintained at a lower temperature than that of zone B, and the temperature of zone D is maintained at a lower temperature than that of zone E.

Abstract: Gas phase oxidation of propylene into acrylic acid in which the mixture of reaction gas is oxidized on a first fixed-bed catalyst and the mixture of product gas which contain acrolein oxidized on a second fixed-bed catalyst. The catalyst shaped bodies comprise an annular geometry in both reaction steps. Gas-phase oxidation of propylene in a one-stage reaction to acrolein and/or acrylic acid or in a two-stage reaction to acrylic acid is such that (i) the initial charge in both cases is \- 160 Nl propylene/l catalyst hour; (ii) the charge to the 2nd stage (if used) includes \- 140 NL acrolein/l catalyst hour ; and (iii) the catalyst or catalysts is/are of ring form with an outer diameter 2-11 mm, length 2-11 mm and a wall-thickness 1-5 mm. The process comprises (A) feeding a mixture of propylene, molecular oxygen and an inert gas with molar ratio O2 : C3H6 \- 1 at high temperature over a solid bed catalyst with characteristics (i) and (iii) above and comprising a multi-metal oxide containing Mo and/or W together with Bi, Te, Sb, Sn and/or Cu such that the propylene conversion and the combined selectivity for acrolein and the acrylic acid by-product are both \- 90 mol.%; and optionally (B) cooling the acrolein-containing gas product and optionally adding molecular O2 and/or inert gas prior to passing it at high temperature and with molar ratio O2 : acrolein \- 0.5 over a Mo- and V-containing multi-metal oxide solid bed catalyst such that the acrolein conversion is \- 90 mol.% and the combined two-stage acrylic acid selectivity (based on propylene conversion) is \- 80 mol.%.
