Abstract: What is disclosed are prostaglandin-analogous cyclopentane derivatives of the formula I wherein R1 is hydrogen or a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, or an araliphatic radical having from 7 to 9 carbon atoms, or a physiologically tolerable metal, NH4 or substituted ammonium ion derived from a primary, secondary or tertiary amine; R2 is a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms; R3 is hydrogen or a R4CO group wherein R4 is a hydrogen atom or a linear or branched alkyl group having up to 10 carbon atoms; A is a saturated, linear or branched alkylene group having from 2 to 5 carbon atoms, and a process for the manufacture thereof.

They are particularly useful as contraceptives for use in humans and as agents for synchronising oestrus in various animal species. They are more potent and longer-acting than natural prostaglandins.
