    Abstract: Biaxially oriented polypropylene (PP) film comprises base ply (or plies) contg. PP having the following properties: (i) a mean isotactic block length of the PP mol. between 2 structural chain defects of, as statistical average, greater than 40; (ii) chain isotactic index for n-heptane-insol. fraction of PP of at least 95%, measured by means of C-NMR spectroscopy; (iii) ratio of wt. average Mw to the number average Mn of the mol. wt. distribution of less than 4; (iv) an n-heptane-soluble fraction of PP of less than 1%; and (v) film shrinkage in the longitudinal direction and in the transverse direction of less than 5%. Also claimed are: (a) a process for the prodn. of the above PP film; (b) the use of the PP film as a packaging film ; (c) the use of the PP film as a laminating film.

    Abstract: A biaxially-oriented polypropylene film has at least one base layer contg. polypropylene with the following properties: (i) a statistical ave. for the isotactic block length between 2 chain breaks of at least 40; (ii) an n-heptane insols. fraction having a chain-isotacticity index (measured by 13C NMR spectroscopy) of at least 95 (esp. at least 97)%; (iii) an Mw/Mn ratio below 4, esp. below 2.7; (iv) an n-heptane soluble fraction below 1%; and (v) a water vapour transmission no more than 24/micron thickness Äg/m .dÜ and an O2 transmission no more than 34,000/meter thickness Äcm /(m .d.bar)Ü. Claimed prodn. is by multi-layer melt extrusion, followed by cooling on a roller and orienting at ratios 3-9:1 lengthwise and 4-12:1 transversely. Pref. the film is 4-100 microns thick,being solely of the above polypropylene layer(s) or having its thickness 40-60% made up of such layer(s). Any other layers (on one or both sides of the polypropylene base layer(s) are of polyolefins which can be heat-sealable. The various layers can also contain neutralising agents, stabilisers, antistats and/or anti-blocking agents. Appropriate polypropylene for the base layer(s) is obtd. using metallocene catalysts.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a catalyst component for preparing a high molecular weight copolymer having the formula I, where M1 is a metal of group IVb, Vb or VIb of the Periodic Table, R1 and R2 are identical or different and are each a hydrogen atom, a C1-C10-alkyl group, a C7-C40-arylalkyl group, a C7-C40-alkylaryl group, a C8-C40-arylalkenyl group-, an OH group or a halogen atom, the radicals R3 are identical or different and are each a halogen atom, a C1-C10-alkyl group, a C1-C10-alkenyl group, a C6-C10-aryl group, R4 to R12 are identical or different and are as defined for R3, or adjacent radicals R4 to R12 together with the atoms connecting them form one or more aromatic or aliphatic rings, or the radicals R5 and R8 or R12 together with the atoms connecting them form an aromatic or aliphatic ring, R4 to R12 are also hydrogen, at least one radical R8, R9, R10, R11 or R12 is different from hydrogen when none of the radicals R5, R6 and R7 are different from hydrogen. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a catalyst system for preparing a high molecular weight copolymer, which catalyst system comprises at least one catalyst component and at least one cocatalyst, preferably an aluminoxane. Finally, the present invention relates to copolymers comprising from 99.5 to 30% by weight of propylene units, based on the total polymer, and from 0.5 to 70% by weight of at least one comonomer, based on the total polymer, where the comonomer comprises units derived from ethylene or olefins having at least 4 carbon atoms and the formula Ra-CH=CH-Rb, where Ra and Rb are identical or different and are each a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical.
