Abstract: A power control system for use in facilitating transition to an active state. The system includes a first transceiver (104), such as a BTS, having the ability to initiate transmission of a power control function. The transceiver (104) comprises a generator (210) and a transmitter (202) for the power control arrangement. The system further includes a second transceiver (106), such as a terminal, for receiving the power control arrangement and coherently combining the power control arrangement to determine a state transition indication. The second transceiver (106) includes a transmitter (204) that transmits a selected waveform subsequent to the coherent combining. The first transceiver (104) receives the selected waveform, determines a power level associated therewith, and provides feedback to the second transceiver (106). The power control arrangement may include groups of redundant power control data, data transmitted on idle feedback dimensions, or predetermined signal patterns in addition to at least one power control group.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing transmission delay in a wireless communication system that carries packetized voice and data information. Interruptions in the traffic channels cause loss of synchronization between a header compressor and a header decompressor. Rather than transmitting resyinchronization information on the traffic channel, the information dropped by an interruption is re-transmitted on a non-traffic channel in parallel with the traffic channel. At the remote station, information from the traffic channel and the non-traffic channel is reassembled before input into the decompressor. Alternatively, the non-traffic channel can be used to carry overflow information so that a higher average data rate can be achieved than the average data rate of the traffic channel alone.

Abstract: Techniques to adjust the setpoint of a power control loop in a wireless communication system. The setpoint may be adjusted based on frame status indicative of erased/good decoded frames, one or more (typically soft) metrics indicative of the confidence in the decoded results, power surplus/deficit indicative of the difference between the received signal quality and the setpoint and a threshold Eb/Nt needed for the desired level of performance, or a combination thereof. The metrics include one of a re-encoded power metric and a modified Yamamoto metric. The setpoint may be adjusted in different manners and/or by different amounts depending on the above-noted factors. The techniques may be employed for forward and/or reverse links in CDMA systems.
