Abstract: Synchronization and bit count integrity of a synchronous data stream is preserved end to end even as it is transmitted via a medium which does not preserve the synchronous nature of the synchronous data stream. A terminal equipment unit produces a constant rate bit stream which is provided to a communications unit. The communications unit produces first, second, and third data frames comprising, respectively, first, second, and third set of bits from the constant rate bit stream and first, second, and third length fields. The first, second, and third data frames are transmitted to a base unit which places the first set of bits from the first frame into a queue. A set of fill bits equal to the maximum number of bits contained in any frame is then placed into the queue. The base unit then determines the number of bits in the second set of bits of the third data frame, based on the first length field value and the third length field value. The base unit overwrites excess fill bits in the queue with the third set of bits. The number of excess fill bits is equal to the difference between the maximum possible number of bits which may be contained in any frame and the number of bits in the second set of bits.

Abstract: An apparatus and method of providing communications between standard unmodified terminal equipment over a telephone link that includes a digital wireless link. The digital wireless link introduces substantial time variable delay. In order to pass time sensitive messages over the link, time sensitive messages are recognized and translated into time insensitive messages for transmission over the wireless link. The time insensitive messages indicate the information contained in the time sensitive messages and in the timing of the time sensitive messages. At the receiving end, the time insensitive messages are recognized and the time sensitive messages reconstructed with the appropriate timing.

Abstract: Synchronized broadcast transmits a same broadcast content using a same waveform from multiple transmitters. Transmitters each apply a same spreadin g code for broadcast transmissions. In a spread-spectrum communication system having a time division multiplexed forward link, a synchronized broadcast transmission is inserted into a broadcast slot. One embodiment employs an Orthogonal Frequency Divisional Multiplex (OFDM) waveform for the synchroniz ed broadcast. An OFDM receiver is then used to process the received synchronize d broadcast transmission. An alternate embodiment implements a broadcast Pseud o- random Noise (PN) code for use by multiple transmitters. An equalizer is the n employed to estimate the synchronized broadcast transmission.

Abstract: A method of invoking and canceling voice and data service between a mobile unit and a base station. Using a standard telephone system, the connection for a voice service and a data service is the same. With the introduction of the digital wireless link, the voice connection and the data connection are different. Therefore new dialing commands which indicate the intent of the connection are created. These commands can also be used to designate the intent of the call from a mobile unit capable of data and voice service but not capable of simultaneous voice and data service. They can also be used to invoke simultaneous voice and data services.

The network call manager (40) further includes a switch matrix (110), coupled to the telephone network interface, for providing an information signal received from an acti ve member user over a selected telephone line to the remaining non-active member users.

Abstract: System and method for minimizing data bottlenecks in Low Data Rate Networks (LDRNs) that communicate facsimile transmissions. An LDRN is a facsimile network having a transmission data rate less than the data rate of the FAX machines serviced by the network. The system and method can be implemented in any type of LDRN, including analog and digital wired LDRNs, as well as analog and digital wireless (e. g., cellular) LDRNs. The system and method involve processing the facsimile transmissions in order to make the data rates of the LDRN and the FAX machines compatible, thereby minimizing any potential facsimile data bottlenecks that may occur in the LDRN due to its slower data rate.
