    Abstract: Apparatus and method are disclosed for digital authentication and verification. In one embodiment, authentication involves storing a cryptographic key and a look up table (LUT), generating an access code using the cryptographic key; generating multiple parallel BPSK symbols based upon the access code; converting the BPSK symbols into multiple tones encoded wit h the access code using the LUT; and outputting the multiple tones encoded wit h the access code for authentication. In another embodiment, verification involves receiving multiple tones encoded with an access code; generating multiple parallel BPSK symbols from the multiple tones; converting the BPSK symbols into an encoded interleaved bit stream of the access code; de- interleaving the encoded interleaved bit stream; and recovering the access code from the encoded de-interleaved bit stream.

    Abstract: A "time multiplexed" transmission scheme capable of reducing the amount of interference from other cells operated at the same frequency band. Each cell in a system transmits in designated time intervals (e.g., time slots) during which other interfering cells may be prevented from transmitting. By temporarily "blanking" transmissions from interfering cells during the designated time slots, the amount of interference from these cells is reduced. The improved signal quality may support transmission at a desired or higher data rate, which may not be possible without cell blanking. In one variant, transmissions from the cells are staggered over different time slots. A set of one or more cells may be designated to transmit in each of a number of slot phases. The cells transmit in a staggered manner on these phases to reduce interference. The transmission scheme may be used for a various channel types (e.g., a control channel) and applications.

    Abstract: A receive filter receives signals from a communication channel. The received signals correspond to original Walsh covered chip sequences transmitted by a transmit filter through the communication channel to the receive filter. The received signals are processed by an equalizer to generate a soft estimate of chip sequences corresponding to the original Walsh covered chip sequences. An N chip Walsh decover is then utilized to generate a soft estimate of code symbols corresponding to the soft estimate of the chip sequences. A number of symbol slicers are then used in parallel to produce a hard estimate of the code symbols corresponding to the soft estimate of code symbols generated by the N chip Walsh decover. Thereafter an N chip Walsh cover is used as part of a scheme to generate a hard estimate of chip sequences corresponding to the hard estimate of the code symbols generated by the symbol slicers. The hard estimate of the chip sequences generated with the aid of the N chip Walsh cover, and the soft estimate of the chip sequences generated by the equalizer, are used to generate a tracking mode error signal to adapt the response of the equalizer to the received signals.

    Abstract: According to a disclosed embodiment, a first plurality of pilot signals of a first polarization is received and ranked. Subsequently, a second plurality of pilot signals of a second polarization is received and ranked. Following, a pilot signal from the first and second pluralities of pilot signals is selected based on a signal quality measurement such as a signal to interference ratio. Moreover, a system can be constructed comprising antennas configured to receive pilot signals of a first and a second polarization. The system further comprises a receiver configured to demodulate the pilot signals and a CPU configured to rank the pilot signals and to select a pilot signal based on a signal quality measurement. Communication quality is improved by communicating with the base transceiver station transmitting the pilot signal providing the highest signal quality measurement.

    Abstract: A transmitting terminal, transmits signals in a form of packets to a receivi ng terminal, if the packet was intended for the receiving terminal, if so, the receiving terminal demodulates the packet. The receiving terminal then computes a quality metric of the packet, and compares the computed quality metric with a quality metric contained in the packet. If the quality metrics match, the packet is forwarded for further processing. If the quality metric s fail to match, the receiving terminal sends a request for retransmission of the packet. The transmitting terminal determines which packet needs to be retransmitted based on the request for retransmission. If delivery of the packet in accordance with the aforementioned description fails, retransmissi on in accordance with conventional sequence-number-based schemes, e.g., radio link protocol, is attempted.
