The compound is obtained by reacting an amine of formula II with a lactone of formula III and, if necessary, further reacting the product with an alkyleneoxide of formula IV. A surfactant containing the compound is useful not only for cleansers used for hair, bodies and dishes but also for face cleansers, cleansers for housings, etc., because of having low irritativity and high safety in addition to excellent foamability.

Since a surfactant consisting of the compound has excellent foaming properties and cleaning properties and low irritation, a cleaner composition comprising the surfactant as a main cleaning base is suitable as a cleaner for hair and skin of babies and infants and a shampoo for people washing hair everyday and people professionally being into contact with a shampoo for many hours.
