Abstract: A method for optimizing clear channel assessment (CCA) parameters in a wireless local area network having an access point (AP) and at least one station begins by receiving a trigger condition. An upper bound and a lower bound for an energy detect threshold (EDT) parameter are determined. A value of the EDT parameter is calculated and is bound by the upper bound and the lower bound. Lastly, the EDT parameter is updated. The method can be perform ed at each station or at the AP, with the updated CCA parameters being signaled to each station associated with the AP.

Abstract: A method for changing a channel in a wireless local area network (WLAN) to alleviate congestion and high interference levels, the WLAN having an access point (AP) and at least one station, begins by determining a list of candida te channels. A channel is selected from the candidate list and is evaluated against predetermined criteria. If the selected channel meets the predetermined criteria, then all of the stations communicating with the AP a re disassociated and the AP is changed to the selected channel. If the selected channel does not meet the predetermined criteria, then the selected channel is removed from the candidate list and the selecting step is repeated if there are additional candidate channels.

Abstract: A silent measurement period (SMP) for a selected channel in an allowable channel set (ACS) of the access point (AP) is set. During the SMP, the AP do es not serve wireless transmit/receive units (WTRUs) within its coverage area a nd reserves its channels for other BSSs. A normal operating channel of the AP i s changed to the selected channel upon initialization of the SMP. Characteristics of the selected channel is measured during the SMP. The operating channel of the AP is changed back to the normal operating channel when the duration of the SMP expires.

Abstract: Wireless mobile unit communication initiation is provided in a radio network that has a plurality of base stations, each providing wireless communication services in a respective geographic coverage. The wireless communication is established by first transmitting an omnidirectional sounding pulse from a wireless mobile unit. Information related to the detected sounding pulse is communicated to an interface by each base station detecting the sounding pulse. One of the base stations that detected the sounding pulse is selected for mobile unit communication based on the communicated information and directs a communication beam to the mobile unit to establish wireless communication. Alternatively, one or more of the base stations that detected the sounding pulse direct a communication beam to the mobile unit and the mobile unit selects unit the base station with which it is to establish wireless communication. Preferably, smart antennas, including directional beamforming capability, are employed by the base stations.

Abstract: A method for handover a mobile unit from a first base station to a second base station in a wireless communication systems employing smart antenna technology. Following trigger events of a handover, the mobile station generates a physical signal sounding pulse transmitted by an isotropic antenna. The sounding pulse may consist of a common sequence of symbols or a specific sequence of symbols that uniquely identifies the mobile station. A series of sounding pulses can be sent according to a power ramping procedure until a base station has focused a communications beam toward the mobile. Receiving base stations provide feedback information upon detection of the sounding pulse allowing the mobile unit and/or base station to form communication beams toward each other. A mapping protocol may also be utilized by the communication system.

Når den første bestemmelsen er positiv, blir den tredje bestemmelse utført som å avgjøre hvorvidt kvaliteten til signaleringsanmodningen er høy eller lav (16). Dersom kvaliteten eller anmodningen er høy, blir signaleringsanmodningen gitt adgang til felles resurser (20). Når kvaliteten er lav, blir en fjerde bestemmelse utført (18) for å avgjøre hvorvidt det skal tilveiebringes adgang til dedikerte resurser (22). Dersom den fjerde bestemmelsen er negativ, gis anmodningen adgang til felles resurser (20).
