Abstract in simplified Chinese:本发明揭示出一种制造保持偏极化单模光纤之方法。在最初阶段制造具有纵向开孔于直径两侧之抽拉毛胚,该开孔位于包层玻璃中并与心蕊玻璃相平行。抽拉毛胚被抽拉为光纤系在一些条件下进行而使得在抽拉毛胚时会使开孔闭合。四周之玻璃包括心蕊玻璃区域之流动将朝向正陷缩之开孔,促使心蕊成为所预期之椭圆形状。开孔断面之面积以及与心蕊之距离将使得心蕊形成为所需要之纵横比值。

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To overcome conventional problems in optical fibers exhibiting single polarization or polarization maintenance properties, and/or high birefringence.SOLUTION: The optical fiber includes a core 12 having a first index of refraction n; and a cladding 14 surrounding the core 12 and having a second index of refraction n, such that nis greater than n. The cladding 14 includes at two sets of glass stress rods 13A and 13B extending longitudinally through the length of the optical fiber 10. The stress rods 13A in one set of the least two sets of glass stress rods 13A and 13B have different CTEs and/or softening points from CTEs and/or softening points of the other set of stress rods 13B. The optical fiber 10 supports a single polarization mode or poses polarization maintaining properties within the operating wavelength range.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming an optical fiber amplifier. SOLUTION: The method for forming the optical fiber amplifier provides a composite preform having a gain material core that includes one or more acoustic velocity varying dopants to provide a longitudinally varying sound speed profile along the gain material core to suppress SBS (Stimulated Brillouin Scattering) effects by raising the SBS threshold, and drawing the composite preform to form the optical fiber amplifier. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber capable of suppressing mode interference. SOLUTION: An optical fiber 10 is provided with: a core 11; a first clad 12, which is arranged to cover the core 11 and has a refractive index lower than that of the core 11; and a second clad 13, which is arranged to cover the first clad 12 and has a refractive index lower than that of the first clad 12. Abstract:
PURPOSE:A porous layer of SiO2 containing specific elements are deposited on the outer surface of the major parent material having the core and the first clad, then the whole parts are clarified to give a parent material for optical fiber with high reliability. CONSTITUTION:A porous parent material 2 for the core is formed through the VAD process by the starting material in the gas phase fed from the burner 1 and the first clad layer 4 is formed on the core with the starting materials in the gas phase fed from the burner 3. Then, a porous layer of SiO2 containing at least one of elements selected from boron, germanium, phosphorus, fluorine, alkali and alkaline earth metals, aluminum and lead is formed on the first clad layer by the starting materials in the gas phase fed from the burner 5. Subsequently, the second clad layer 8 is preferably formed by the starting material fed from the burner 7 and the whole is clarified into glass.
