Abstract:
A method of analyzing a liquid sample by applying the sample to a composite test paper composed of a strip plastic transparent film and a reflectivity reference or compensation paper piece and a plurality of color reaction test paper pieces affixed to the strip, feeding the test paper to a spectral reflectivity measuring device a predetermined period of time after the application, and calculating the corrected reflectivities of each of the paper pieces from the measured amounts of reflected light at varying wavelengths to determine the concentration of the abnormal substance contained in the test sample, free of measuring errors due to the color if any of the sample, differences in the color developed and variations in the thickness of the color reaction test paper pieces and reflectivity reference or compensation paper piece. A system for practicing this method is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for detecting the presence of mycotoxins in cereals, the method comprising: capturing at least one diffuse-light absorption spectrum of a collection of cereal grains; capturing at least one diffuse-light absorption spectrum of at least one individual cereal grain from the collection of cereal grains; and classifying the level of mycotoxin contamination in at least one cereal grain by performing multivariate data analysis on the at least one diffuse-light absorption spectrum of the collection of cereal grains and the at least one diffuse-light absorption spectrum of the at least one individual cereal grain.
Abstract:
Provided herein is an apparatus for assessing a color characteristic of a gemstone. The apparatus comprises an optically opaque platform for supporting a sample gemstone to be assessed, a daylight-approximating light source to provide uniform illumination to the gemstone, an image capturing component, and a telecentric lens positioned to provide an image of the illuminated gemstone to the image capturing component. Also provided are methods of color analysis based on images collected using such an apparatus.
Abstract:
Abstract:
A measuring device comprising: an Ulbricht sphere (1) that has a reflecting inner surface (2) and a sample opening (3); at least one semiconductor light source (4) arranged into the sphere (1); means (6) for preventing the entry of direct light from the source (4) into the opening (3) and to the sample and for equalizing the light received therein; at least one measuring tube (5) installed in the sphere (1) and directed towards the opening (3) for receiving reflected light from the sample; and means installed into the sphere (1 for determining the light received from the source (4) and equalized or diffused by the inner surface (2) as a reference level. The preventive means consist of at least one shade (6) arranged to the tube (5), the shade protruding from the tube (5) in the lateral direction thereof, and of the source (4) arranged to the upper sphere (1) part, to the opposite sphere (1) side in relation to the opening (3), and directed towards the lower part of the tube (5) and/or the upper shade (6) surface; and the reference level determining means comprise at least one reference measurement tube (7) directed to measure uniform light substantially from the middle of the inner surface (2) in relation to the upper and lower sphere (1) portions.
Abstract:
The concentration of a component such as alcohol or glucose in a sample of an opaque liquid such as blood is determined by mounting a sample holder (16) containing the liquid sample (2) or adjacent an integrating sphere (3) and directing light from a light source (1) into the integrated sphere (3 )so that the sample is exposed to the light and light from the sample passes into the integrated sphere. A spectral analysis is performed on light from the integrating sphere and the results processed and displayed or printed as information as to the presence and/or concentration of the component in the sample.
Abstract:
A method of verifying the color and tinting strength of a manufactured batch of a semi-transparent wood stain. In accordance with the method, a standard batch of the wood stain is formed and then mixed with a specified amount of a white colorant to form a standard measurement batch. A test sample of the manufactured batch is obtained and is also mixed with a specified amount of the white colorant to form a test measurement sample. Layers of the standard measurement batch and the test measurement sample are formed on the substrates and complete hide obtained. Reflectance measurements of the layers are made using a spectrophotometer. The reflectance measurements are used to determine if the color and the tinting strength of the manufactured batch is within an acceptable deviation range of the color and tinting strength of the standard batch. This allows for objective color difference and tint strength difference calculations, and adjustments can be made therefrom, therefore eliminating the past visual trial and error methods.
