Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve electron emission efficiency by providing a covering layer made of a material having a work function lower than that of the material of an electron emission section on the electron emission section, and burying a control electrode in a substrate directly below the electron emission section via an insulating layer. SOLUTION: An insulating layer 6 is formed on a substrate 1, a pair of opposing element electrodes 2, 3 are arranged on it, and a conductive thin film 4 containing an electron emission section 5 is formed in contact with two electrodes 2, 3. A control electrode 7 is formed directly below the electron emission section 5 via the insulting layer 6, and a connecting electrode 8 is connected to the control electrode 7. The electron emission section 5 is formed at a part of the thin film 4, it has cracks in it, and a low-work function material layer made of a martial having a work function lower than that of the material forming the electron emission section 5 is formed on the electron emission section 5 and on the thin film 4 near it. The low-work function material layer is formed to cause electron emission even if the field intensity in the cracks is low. An alkaline metal or an alkaline earth metal can be used for the material.

A cavity 26 is formed from the first insulation layer 22 extending over the focusing electrode 25, and on emitter 27 is formed in the cavity 26. The tip of the emitter 27 is protruded beyond the top face of the gate electrode 23, and an electron beam modulation signal is applied to between the gate electrode 23 and the focusing electrode 25.

An element train group of a surface conduction type electron emission elements 1005 is driven one by one line from an input end of one side of its line by the scan signal driving part 1003 or 1004 based on the inputted scan control signal. A signal based on the inputted data signal is supplied by the data signal driving part 1002 to a grid 13 for controlling an electron beam emitted from the element 1005.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To control the electron beam easily and to obtain an electron beam generating device to emit a stable electron beam by laminating electron emitting elements on a modulating electrode through an insulating layer, and making the modulating electrode asymmetric. CONSTITUTION:Electron emitting elements are laminated on a modulating electrode 3 through an insulating layer 7. In this case, when the form of the modulating electrode 3 is made symmetric to an electron emitter 4 as the center, the electric field is even at the upper side near the outer side of the electron emitter 4, but when the form is asymmetric, the electric field is changed. To make the modulating electrode 3 asymmetric, one or more of the form, the area, and the position of the modulating electrode 3 in the scope not to superpose with the electron emitter 4 and element electrodes 2 in the up and down direction, may be made different laterally making the electron emitter 4 as the center. The modulating electrode 3 is made asymmetric by a controller 5 for electron beam rectifying in such a way, to change the electric field at the upper side near the outer side of the electron emitter 4. As a result, the electron beam can be controlled profitably, and an electron beam generating device which can emit stable electron beams can be obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To drive at a low voltage and to reduce a damage of element by making the thickness of a modulating electrode thicker than that of the element electrode of an electron emitting element in an electron beam generating device furnishing plain grid electrode on a base. CONSTITUTION:A modulating electrode 2 is provided on the same base of an electron emitting element, and the thickness of the modulating electrode 2 is made thicker than that of an element electrode. In this case, the thickness of a base 1 is preferable to be 0.8mm to 1mm in respect of the mechanical strength and the like. The thickness L of the modulating electrode 2 is made 0.05 to 3000mum, while the thickness l of the element electrode is made 0.01 to 500mum. And the interval S between the modulating electrode 2 and the element electrode 3 is preferable to be 5 to 500mum. Consequently, the modulating beams between electron beams are reduced, the modulating efficiency is improved, and a low voltage driving can be made possible.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To add a deflecting function to a modulating electrode, and to realize a large image screen, to improve the deflecting efficiency, and to realize a high precision and a high luminance, by multifying the modulating electrode. CONSTITUTION:Electrodes 4 and 4' furnishing independent voltage applying means respectively, to modulate and deflect the electron beams emitted from an electron emitting element provided on an insulating base 1 are provided plurally to each one electrode emitting element. In other words, these modulating electrodes 4 and 4' are multiplied. In this case, the electron emitting element may be a hot cathode or a cold cathode, but an electron emitting element called as a surface conductive type emitting element in cold cathodes is favorable to be used. As a result, not only a modulating function, but also a deflecting function can be given to the modulating electrodes 4 and 4'. Consequently, a large image screen, a high precision, and a high luminance can be realized.
