Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the extractive separation of nickel(0) complexes and phosphorus-containing ligands and/or free phosphorus-containin g ligands from a reaction discharge of a hydrocyanation of unsaturated mononitries to dinitriles, by means of a hydrocarbon, the hydrocarbon and th e reaction discharge being separated into two phases at a temperature T (in ~C ). The invention is characterised in that the content of nickel(0) complexes an d phosphorus-containing ligands and/or free phosphorus-containing ligands in t he reaction discharge of the hydrocyanation is at least y wt. %, depending on t he temperature T, and a maximum of 60 wt. % independently of the temperature T. The numerical value of the minimum content y is indicated by the equation y = 0,5 T + 20, T being a dimensionless numerical value.

Abstract: The invention is a process for preparing tetraalkyl-substituted biphenol which comprises reacting a 2,4- or 2,6-dialkyl substituted phenol in which the alkyl groups contain 1 to 6 carbon atoms with a peroxidase enzyme in the presence of a peroxide in an aqueous medium to yield a tetraalkyl-substituted biphenol by oxidative coupling of the 2,4- or 2,6-dialkyl substituted phenol, or yielding a tetra-alkyl substituted quinone, and reducing the quinone to obtain a tetraalkyl-substituted biphenol. The invention further includes a process for preparing a tetraaryl-substituted biphenol in which the aryl groups contain 6 to 10 carbon atoms which comprises racting a 2,4 or 2,6 diarylphenol with a peroxidase enzyme to yield a tetraaryl-substituted biphenol. A process for reducing a tetraalkyl-substituted quinone to corresponding tetraalkyl-substituted biphenol which comprises reducing the quinone with a phenol in an aqueous medium at a temperature of about 60° to 120° C. is also included.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for dehydrating hydrocyanic acid by distillation. Said method is characterised in that a crude hydrocyanic acid containing between 50 and 99.9 wt. % HCN, between 0.1 and 40 wt. % water, between 0 and 15 wt. % carbon oxides and optionally between 0.01 and 1 wt. % non-volatile stabiliser is distilled in a distillation column at a pressure of between 1 bar and 2.5 bar, a sump temperature of between 100 ~C and 130 ~C a nd a head temperature of between 25 ~C and 54 ~C in the absence of a volatile stabiliser. A discharge stream, containing purified anhydrous hydrocyanic ac id and carbon oxides is thus obtained from the head and a discharge stream containing water and optionally the non-volatile stabiliser is obtained from the sump.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the recycling of a Lewis acid from a reaction mixture (I), obtained from the hydrocyanation of an olefinically- unsaturated compound to give a nitrile, which has a miscibility gap with wat er under certain concentration, pressure and temperature conditions, in the presence of a catalyst system comprising a Lewis acid and a complex compound of a phosphorus-containing compound suitable as a ligand and a central atom suitable for said compound, characterised in that a) said complex compound i s separated from a mixture (I) to give a mixture (II), b) mixture (II) is treated with water and undergoes a transformation generating pressure and temperature conditions to give a phase (III) with a higher proportion of wat er than said nitrile and a phase (IV) which has a higher proportion of said nitrile than of water, whereby phase (III) has a higher content of said Lewi s acid than phase (IV), c) phase (III) is treated with a liquid diluent (V) which c1) does not form an azeotrope with water and the boiling point of whi ch is higher than that of water under certain pressure conditions, or c2) forms an azeotrope or heteroazeotrope with water under certain pressure conditions , d) the mixture of phase (III) and liquid diluent (V) is distilled under the pressure conditions given in step c1) or c2) to give a mixture (VI) which ha s a higher proportion of water than of liquid diluent (V) and a mixture (VII) which has a higher proportion of diluent (V) than water, whereby mixture (VI I) has a higher content of said Lewis acid than mixture (VI), and e) mixture (VII) is fed to a hydrocyanation of an olefinically-unsaturated compound to give a nitrile, which has a miscibility gap with water under certain concentration, pressure and temperature conditions, in the presence of a catalyst system comprising a Lewis acid and a complex compound of a phosphor us- containing compound suitable as a ligand and a central atom suitable for sai d compound.
