Abstract: Fiber coatings with low Young's modulus, high tear strength, and/or high critical stress are realized with coating compositions that include an oligomeric material formed from an isocyanate, a hydroxy acrylate compound and a polyol. The oligomeric material includes a polyether urethane acrylate and a di-adduct compound. The reaction mixture used to form the oligomeric material includes a molar ratio of isocyanate:hydroxy acrylate:polyol of n:m:p, where when p is 2, n is in the range from 3.0 to 5.0 and m is in the range from 1.50n-3 to 2.50n-5. Control of the n:m:p ratio leads to compositions that, when cured, provide coatings and cured products having high critical stress, high tear strength, and a high ratio of tear strength to Young's modulus.

Abstract: According to some embodiments a method of processing an optical fiber comprises the steps of: (i) drawing the fiber at a drawing rate of at least 30 m/sec; and (ii) cooling the drawn fiber in a gas at an average cooling rate less than 5000° C./s, such that said cooling reduces the temperature of the fiber from an entering temperature in the range between 1500° C. and 1700° C. to another temperature in the range between 1200° C. and 1400° C., the gas being at a temperature between 800° C. and 1500° C.; and the thermal conductivity κ of the gas being not greater than 1.5×10−4 cal/cm-s-K for at least one temperature within a range of 800° C. to 1500° C. at one atm (atmosphere) pressure absolute.

Abstract: A co-doped optical fiber is provided having an attenuation of less than about 0.17 dB/km at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The fiber includes a core region in the fiber having a graded refractive index profile with an alpha of greater than 5. The fiber also includes a first cladding region in the fiber that surrounds the core region. Further, the core region has a relative refractive index of about −0.10% to about +0.05% compared to pure silica. In addition, the core region includes silica that is co-doped with chlorine at about 1.2% or greater by weight and fluorine between about 0.1% and about 1% by weight.

The optical fiber also has an inner cladding surrounding the core and having a minimum relative refractive index Δ2MIN, a first outer cladding surrounding the inner cladding and a second outer cladding surrounding the first outer cladding. The viscosity at 1650° C. of the second outer cladding minus the viscosity at 1650° C. of the first outer cladding is greater than 0.1e7 Poise, and Δ1MAX>Δ2MIN. The single mode optical fiber may also have an outer cladding surrounding the inner cladding made from silica or SiON. The first outer cladding has a maximum relative refractive index Δ3MAX, and Δ3MAX>Δ2MIN.

Abstract: Alkali-free glasses are disclosed having (in weight %) 50≦SiO2≦80%, 2≦Al2O3≦17%, 8≦B2O3≦36%, and greater than or equal to 2% and less than or equal to 25% of at least one of CaO, MgO, BaO, SrO or ZnO. The alkali-free glasses can have a surface layer with greater than 0.2 weight % N. Such alkali-free glasses are achieved by nitriding processes and exhibit increased strength, scratch resistance and chemical durability.

Abstract: A single mode optical fiber having a core made from silica and less than or equal to about 6.5 weight % germania and having a maximum relative refractive index Δ1MAX. The optical fiber also has an inner cladding surrounding the core and having a minimum relative refractive index Δ2MIN. A difference between a softening point of the core and a softening point of the inner cladding is less than or equal to about 20° C., and Δ1MAX>Δ2MIN. The single mode optical fiber may also have an outer cladding surrounding the inner cladding made from silica or SiON. The outer cladding has a maximum relative refractive index Δ3MAX, and Δ3MAX>Δ2MIN. A method for manufacturing an optical fiber includes providing a preform to a first furnace, the preform, drawing the optical fiber from the preform, and cooling the drawn optical fiber in a second furnace.

Abstract: A method of arresting propagation of an incident crack through a transparent material includes focusing pulsed laser beams into a laser beam focal line directed into the transparent material a series of locations corresponding to a predetermined pattern that is designed to arrest an incident crack that propagates through the transparent material, and generating, with the laser beam focal line (1460), an induced absorption within the transparent material in order to produce a defect (1440) in the transparent material.

The core region includes a spatially uniform updopant to minimize low Rayleigh scattering and a relative refractive index and radius configured to provide large effective area. The inner cladding region features a large trench volume to minimize bending loss. The core may be doped with Cl and the inner cladding region may be doped with F.

Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a method of making an optical fiber with improved bend performance, the optical fiber having a core and at least one cladding layer, and a chlorine content in the in the last layer of the at least one cladding layer that is greater than 500 ppm by weight. The fiber is prepared using a mixture of a carrier gas, a gaseous chlorine source material and a gaseous reducing agent during the sintering of the last or outermost layer of the at least one cladding layer. The inclusion of the reducing gas into a mixture of the carrier gas and gaseous chlorine material reduces oxygen-rich defects that results in at least a 20% reduction in TTP during hydrogen aging testing.
