Abstract: An Internet protocol (IP) telephony system provides telephony services to a mobile telephony device via data packet communications that traverse a data network. If the IP telephony system has received calls that were missed by the user of the mobile telephony device, or if the IP telephony system has received communications that have not yet been reviewed by the user of the mobile telephony device, information about those missed calls and unreviewed messages is delivered to the mobile telephony device so that the user can be alerted to their existence. The information may be delivered to the mobile telephony device in a push notification.

Abstract: The invention relates to methods and systems for creating a correlation between telephone numbers associated with different geographical areas. This comprises the steps of receiving (S502, S504), from a telephony device, a request for the assignment of a telephone number associated with a first geographical area that is to correspond to a telephone number associated with a second geographical area; assigning (S506) a first telephone number associated with the first geographical area to a second telephone number associated with the second geographical area, where the first telephone number can subsequently be used to connect telephony communications to the second telephone number; and informing (S508) the telephony device of the first telephone number.

Abstract: A method of providing communications services to a user of a mobile telephony device, the method comprising displaying telephony communications services plan options offered by a first telephony service provider on a user's mobile telephony device that receives telephony service from a second telephony service provider; communicating the user's telephony communications services plan selection to a third party merchant via the user's mobile telephony device; and effecting the purchase of the selected telephony communications services plan from the third party merchant using the user's mobile telephony device such that the user can obtain telephony services from both the first telephony service provider and the second telephony service provider, wherein the user has a pre-existing account with the third party merchant, wherein the effecting step comprises facilitating communications between the third party merchant and the user such that the user can purchase the selected telephony communications services plan via the user's pre-existing account, wherein the user's mobile telephony device receives, from the third party merchant, information about the user's purchase of a telephony communications services plan after the purchase has been made, and wherein the user's mobile telephony device sends at least some of the information received from the third party merchant to the first telephony service provider so that the first telephony service provider can verify the user's purchase of a telephony communications services plan.

Abstract: Methods of addressing problems in a voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) telephony system include collecting data on network events, analyzing the data, and taking corrective action when possible. If an IP telephony device is registering with the VOIP telephony system more frequently than necessary, which can indicate the IP telephony device is unnecessarily jumping between proxy services, the IP telephony device is instructed to re-initialize itself. If an IP telephony device sends two successive stay alive registration messages to a proxy server from different ports of a router, which can indicate that a router pinhole is closing between stay alive messages, then the IP telephony device is instructed to send stay alive registration messages more frequently. If data packet statistics indicate that an IP telephony device is experiencing a jitter problem, the IP telephony device is instructed to increase the size of a data buffer for incoming data packets.

Abstract: Disclosed embodiments are generally directed to systems and methods for discovering a network path. A disclosed method includes evaluating the first path and the second path from the plurality of network paths, obtaining a first quality rating associated with the first path and a second quality rating for the second path, selecting a preferred path from one of the first path or the second path according to the first quality rating and the second quality rating, and commencing a real-time communication over the preferred path.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for providing and using a telephone calling card are described. In one example, a planar body includes a memory system, a dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) generator, and a speaker. The memory system is configured to store identification data for allowing a user to place a telephone call. The DTMF generator is coupled to the memory system and is configured to generate password-protected DTMF tones to convey the identification data. The speaker is coupled to the DTMF generator and is configured to emit the DTMF tones. The DTMF tones may be played into a telephone for making a call using the telephone calling card apparatus. Since the identification data (e.g., account number and/or personal identification number) is played into the telephone and password-protected, rather than being manually entered by the user, the identification data is less susceptible to unauthorized disclosure and thus less susceptible to fraudulent use.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for authorizing a calling card telephone call are described. In one example, a telephone calling card includes a planar body having a memory system, an input circuit, a controller, and a display. The memory system is configured to store key code information. The input circuit is configured to receive a personal identification number (PIN). The controller is configured to derive a key code from the key code information using the PIN. The display is configured to present the key code. The user may then use the key code for purposes of authorizing a call made using a calling card. The key code may change from time-to-time as the user uses the calling card. Since the user's PIN is not entered into a telephone by the user, the calling card is less susceptible to unauthorized and/or fraudulent use by third parties.
