Abstract: PURPOSE: A composition containing [6]-gingerol as an active ingredient is provided to suppress apoptosis and oxidative damage of nerve cells and use in pharmaceutical fomposition and health functional food for preventing or treating disorder relating to memory and cognitive ability. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating disorders relating to memory and cognitive ability contains 0.1-50 weight% of [6]-gingerol of structural formula I as an active ingredient. The disorders are Alzheimer's disease, intracerbroventricular dementia, pick disease, Creutzfeldt-jakob disease, and dementia or Parkinson's disease caused by head injury. A health functional food for preventing and treating disorder relating to memory and cognitive ability also contains the [6]-gingerol. The health functional food is used in the form of tablet, capsule, pill or liquid.
