Abstract: An electronic device 10 comprises: a housing having conductive sidewalls 12W, a conductive turret 12T separated from the conductive sidewalls by a slot 74, and a conductive bridge 12B coupling the conductive turret to the conductive sidewalls across the slot; a display 14 mounted to the conductive turret and having conductive structures 70; and an antenna 40 having a patch element 66 formed from the conductive turret and the conductive display structures, and an antenna ground that includes the conductive sidewalls. The slot may define radiating edges of the radiating element. The display may comprise a conductive ring 78 that forms part of the patch element and couples the display to the conductive turret. A dielectric gasket (86, Figure 6) may be laterally interposed between the conductive display structures and the conductive turret. The electronic device may be a wristwatch, and may comprise a wrist strap 16 attached to the conductive sidewalls. Integrating the antenna into the device in this way may maximize the bandwidth of the antenna by extending the antenna area to include the entire lateral area of the electronic device. This may also serve to maximize the active area of the display.

Abstract: Antenna structures or an electronic device 10 comprise conductive members of a resonant antenna element where parasitic coupling 336 is present. The parasitic coupling 336 may be between a second antenna 40W resonating element 306 and a first antenna 40F resonating element 108 and/or an inductor 214 of a split return path from a first antenna element 108 to a ground member 104 terminals 204. The antenna structures may comprise multiple antennas which may include an inverted- F antenna as a first antenna 40F element and an additional antenna as a second antenna 40W resonating element. The antenna elements may be formed from portions of the peripheral conductive electronic device housing structure present at either end of a device 10, including, for example, a display bezel. A conductive portion of a device’s display may be used to form at least a portion of an antenna ground member. Impedance matching circuitry may be used within the antenna structures. The second antenna 40W may be formed in a cut-out region of a ground member 104. The structures may be formed from various metals and dielectric materials and may provide a compact, efficient and detuning resistant antenna for electronic devices.

Abstract: An electronic device 10 comprises: first and second antennas 40A, 40B and a speaker 76 within a housing 12, where there is an antenna isolation element located on a moving member 74 of the speaker. The antenna isolation element may be a parasitic resonating slot element formed in a metal foil layer laminated to the moving diaphragm member 74. The antennas may operate as dual-band wireless local area network antennas at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The antennas may be formed by metal traces 72 printed on a circuit board which is separated from the moving member 74 of the speaker by an air gap. Each antenna may have a respective printed circuit shielding cavity 66 with conductive gaskets 62. The electronic device may include a touch sensor and transceiver and control circuitry to drive the speaker 76 to play some desired media content. Also disclosed is an electronic device comprising: a cylindrical housing; a printed circuit, on which there are first and second antennas; and a metal layer having a slot opening which forms an antenna isolation element providing radio frequency isolation between the first and second antennas. An electronic device comprising: a speaker with a movable structure, where a metal layer is on the movable structure and an antenna structure is formed from the metal layer, is further disclosed.

Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a dielectric cover layer, a dielectric substrate, and a phased antenna array on the dielectric substrate for conveying millimeter wave signals through the dielectric cover layer. The array may include conductive traces mounted against the dielectric layer. The conductive traces may form patch elements or parasitic elements for the phased antenna array. The dielectric layer may have a dielectric constant and a thickness selected to form a quarter wave impedance transformer for the array at a wavelength of operation of the array. The substrate may include fences of conductive vias that laterally surround each of the antennas within the array. When configured in this way, signal attenuation, destructive interference, and surface wave generation associated with the presence of the dielectric layer over the phased antenna array may be minimized.

Abstract: Antenna structures at a given end of an electronic device may include antenna structures that are shared between multiple antennas. The device may include an antenna with an inverted-F antenna resonating element formed from portions of a peripheral conductive electronic device housing structure and may have an antenna ground that is separated from the antenna resonating element by a gap. A short circuit path may bridge the gap. The short circuit path may be a split return path coupled between a first point on the inverted-F antenna resonating element arm and second and third points on the antenna ground. The electronic device may include an additional antenna that includes the antenna ground and metal traces that form an antenna resonating element arm. The antenna resonating element arm of the additional antenna may be parasitically coupled to the inverted-F antenna resonating element and a portion of the split return path.

The second terminal may cover a cellular low band when the switch is open. The first terminal may cover the cellular low band and higher bands when the switch is closed.

Abstract: An electronic device may have a speaker mounted in a housing. The housing may have a top face and a longitudinal axis that passes through the top face. A printed circuit may lie parallel to the top face. Input-output circuitry such as a touch sensor and other components may be mounted on the top face overlapping the printed circuit. First and second antennas may be formed on the printed circuit. A speaker may be mounted in the housing facing along the longitudinal axis. A metal layer on a movable portion of the speaker may be patterned to form a slot antenna isolation element or other antenna isolation element. The antenna isolation element may be configured to exhibit a resonance at a frequency of operation of the first and second antennas and may therefore enhance isolation between the first and second antennas.

Abstract: A millimetre wave electronic communication device 10 comprises a dielectric cover layer, a dielectric substrate having a surface mounted against the dielectric cover layer, and a phased antenna array on the dielectric substrate wherein the phased antenna array comprises conductive traces. The phased antenna array is configured to transmit radio-frequency signals between 10 GHz – 300 GHz. A second aspect comprises the dielectric cover layer forming a quarter wave impedance transformer. A third aspect comprises a plurality of conductive trace antennas attached to the dielectric housing wall and a fence of conductive vias extending through the substrate, laterally surrounding each antenna trace. The phased arrays may comprise patch elements and parasitic elements.
