    Abstract: A process for the preparation of an amide-containing polyether comprises polycondensing a dihalobenzene compound, preferably bis-(4-chlorophenyl) sulfone or 4,4'-bis-(4''-chlorobenzoyl)-diphenyl ether, with an amide-containing bis-phenol of the formula HO-Ar1-NHCO-Ar2-CONH-Ar1-OH where Ar1 is an aromatic radical of 6 to 12 carbon atoms and Ar2 is an aromatic radical of 6 to 12 carbon atoms or has the formula II where A1 is -SO2-, -CO-, -C(CH3)2- or 0 and n is 0 or 1, preferably 1,4-bis(4-hydroxybenzamido)-benzene, in the presence of an anhydrous alkali metal carbonate, and optionally in the presence of a bisphenol of the formula III where Ar1 and A1 have the above meanings and n and m are 0 or 1. The polyethers may be used to produce moldings, fibers, films, adhesives and coating materials.

    Abstract: Polyethers, preferably containing sulfone groups, are obtained by a multi-stage condensation process at from 100 DEG to 230 DEG C. from substantially equivalent amounts of bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-sulfone and a dichlorobenzene compound in a polar aprotic solvent in the presence of an anhydrous alkali metal carbonate, with or without the addition of a compound which forms an azeotrope.

    Abstract: New aromatic polyamide-imides (I) with 1,3,4-thiadiazole gps. consist of units of the formula (in which Y has the formula n = 100-10,000. Ar1 is a m- or p-aryl gp. Ar2 is as Ar1 or -Ar3-Y'-Ar4; Ar3 and Ar4 are as Ar1. Y' is Y, S, O, SO2, CO or a direct bond). Fibrides, fibres, films, foams, insulating lacquers, coating compsns. and laminates can be made from (I) solns., according to the mol. wt., and the pptd. (I) can be moulded by hot pressing. (I) have better thermal stability than aromatic olyamides with Y gps. and an ether and/or sulphonic acid gp. and can be produced from solns. usin readily available starting materials. (I) have terminal carboxyl, urea, amido and/or amino gps. (I) are prepd. by reacting trimellitic acid or anhydride (II) with H2N-Ar1-Y-Ar1-NH2 and then with OCN-Ar2-Y'-Ar2-NCO. E.g. a 22% soln. of (I) with a soln. viscosity of 34600 cP at 20 degrees C and intrinsic viscosity of 0.8 dl/g was prepd. from 0.5 mole (II), 0.25 mole H2N-O-Y-O-NH2, 0.25 mole OCN-0-O-0-NCO and 0.003 mole OCN-0-CH2-0-NCO (in which 0 is p-phenylene).
