    Abstract: Described is a method for the catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of alkyl aromatics or paraffin hydrocarbons to the corresponding alkenyl aromatics or olefins, respectively, by means of a redox catalyst (oxygen carrier). In a first step, the alkyl aromatic or paraffin (educt) is dehydrogenated, in the absence of molecular oxygen, by a solid catalyst consisting of reducible magnesium vanadate(V) which may or may not be on a carrier, the catalyst being reduced in the process, and in a second step the reduced catalyst is re-oxidized with an oxidizing agent, the two steps being carried out in alternation at separate times or in separate locations.

The catalyst is particularly suitable for the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene in the presence of steam.

    Abstract: An arrangement, esp. a reactor, for carrying out endo- and/or exothermic catalytically advanced gas phase reactions, consists of a mantle, a heat exchanger (1) with deflector plates (1a), a reaction chamber (6) with a base which accommodates the catalyst, and a tube handle heat exchanger (2) for the catalyst filling. The heat exchangers are exposed to a side flow. A central pipe (3) connects the outer heat exchanger (1) area with the gas chamber over the reaction chamber (4). The arrangement also has a hot gas inlet and outlet.
