    Abstract: Process for the preparation of nitrogen five-membered ring heterocycles of the general formula I in which R , R , R , R , R , R , R and R are hydrogen, R is C1- to C10-alkyl, C1- to C10-hydroxyalkyl, C1- to C10-aminoalkyl, aryl, C7- to C10-aralkyl and C7- to C10-alkylaryl, R and R are C1- to C8-alkyl, R and R together are oxygen, with the proviso that R is hydrogen, R and R and/or R and R or R and R together are a bond, by reacting vinyloxiranes of the general formula II in which R and R have the abovementioned meanings, with ammonia or primary amines of the general formula III R -NH2 (III), in which R has the abovementioned meanings, in the presence of a compound of an element of sub-group VIII or sub-group I of the Periodic Table of the Elements, optionally with addition of a Lewis acid, at temperatures from 20 to 200 DEG C and pressures from 1 to 70 bar, and subsequently cyclising in the presence of hydrogen and of a hydrogenation catalyst at temperatures from 150 to 350 DEG C and pressures from 0.1 to 300 bar.

    Abstract: A method for the prepn. of butane-1,4-diol comprises the reaction of 1,3-butadiene diepoxide with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst contg. active components other than elementary palladium and/or platinum. Pref. the catalyst is a heterogeneous one and contains at least one group Ib, VIIb or VIIIb metal, pref. one or more from Co, Cu, Mn, Mo, Na, NI, Re, Os or Ru, most pref. Co, Ni, Cu or Re. The catalyst carrier is chosen from one or more of the following: oxides of Al and Ti, ZrO2, SiO2, diatomaceous earth, silica gel, alumina, silicates, zeolites or active carbon. Hydrogenation is carried out at 0-300 (60-220) degrees C and 1-300 (10-250) bar in a solvent.
