Abstract: Water and ammonia are removed from crude benzophenone-imines obtained by the catalytic reaction of ammonia with benzophenones of formula (I), in which R , R = (a) halogen, hydroxyl, nitro or amino groups, (b) 1-12C linear, branched or cyclic alkyl or alkoxy, optionally substituted with 6-10C aryl, F, Cl or Br, (c) 6-10C aryl or aryloxy, optionally substituted with 1-12C alkyl or alkoxy, (d) heteroalkyl groups comprising alkyl groups as above with in-chain O, S and/or N atom(s), or (e) heteroaryl groups with 5-10 ring atoms containing 1-3 O, S and/or N atoms; m, n = 0-5. The process comprises removing the ammonia by distillation and removing the water by distillation or with a drying agent.

Abstract: Formic acid-free N-alkyl-N'-methyl-alkylene ureas (I) are obtained from reaction mixtures obtained from the corresponding alkylene urea (II) and formaldehyde in presence of formic acid by supplying the mixture to the upper part of a distillation column, carrying out distillation under specific pressure and temperature conditions and recovering HCOOH-free (I) from the lower part of the column. Preparation of formic acid-free N-alkyl-N'-methyl-alkylene ureas of formula (I), by reacting the corresponding alkylene urea of formula (II) with monomeric or polymerized formaldehyde (HCHO) in presence of formic acid (HCOOH), involves supplying the reaction mixture containing (I) and HCOOH to the upper part of a distillation column, carrying out distillation without further additives and recovering HCOOH-free (I) from the lower part of the column. The pressure is in the upper part of the column is higher than that in the lower part by 10-100 (preferably 20-40) mbars and the temperature in the lower part of the column is higher than that in the upper part by 40-210 (preferably 80-150) degrees C. R1 = H or Me; R2 = H or 1-4C alkyl; x = 0 or 1.

Abstract: Purification of alpha , beta , gamma -substituted carboxylic acids of formula (I), their salts and esters or a mixture of these and one or more polyol and one or more aminoalcohol in aqueous solution comprises treatment by electrodialysis. R1 = H, 1-10C alkyl, Na or K ; R2 = H or 1-10C alkyl; R3 = H, 1-10C alkyl (optionally substituted by NH2, OH, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy or halo-substituted phenyl); X = halo (when R3 is absent), N, O, P, S; and m = 0-2. Also claimed are: (i) cleavage of an optically active amide to an optically active amine and (I); and (ii) resolution of a racemic primary or secondary amine by reacting (I) with a hydrolase, separating the unreacted enantiomer of the amine from the amide and hydrolysing the amide to give the amine enantiomer and (I).

Abstract: The production of neopentyl glycolhydroxypivalate (NPG-HP) granules (I) comprises pouring molten NPG-HP onto a cooling surface so that the melt solidifies, using a melt containing 3 wt.% NPG-HP crystals. Also claimed are: (i) NPG-HP granules (I) obtained by the above process, especially: (a) spherical granules with an average diameter of 3-16 mm; or (b) granules with an average diameter of 20-100 mm and at least two parallel faces 15-30 mm apart; and (ii) the use of a granulating system for the above process, with a precooler (2) for the NPG-HP melt, a precrystalliser (3), and a drop-forming system (4) or a flat spreader to bring the melt onto a cooling belt (6), with a crusher if a flat spreader is used.
